Report: Suspect in Ohio shooting from violent family

In rare situations, students who are isolated from their peers, and lose interest in activities they used to like doing, can sometimes become violent. NBC's Chris Jansing reports.

By msnbc.com staff, NBC News and news services

The teen who authorities believe was behind a shooting Monday in Chardon, Ohio, that killed two students and wounded three others had violence in his life from early on, Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper reported.

Court records showed that the suspect's father, Thomas Lane Jr., had been arrested several times for abusing women he had children with, including the teen's mother, the newspaper reported. The father had been warned to stay away from the teen's mother at least once, records reportedly showed.

Police have not formally identified the suspected gunman, but students, parents of students and local media said his name was T.J. Lane.

It was not clear whether T.J. Lane and his father had any contact, the newspaper reported.

The suspect's family said through attorney Bob Farinacci that they were struggling to comprehend what had happened a day after the worst U.S. high school shooting in nearly a year.

"This is something that could never have been predicted. T.J.'s family has asked for some privacy while they try to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred and while they mourn this terrible loss for their community," the statement read.

Students at the high school outside of Cleveland were told to stay home Tuesday.

Officials believe T.J. Lane opened fire inside a high school cafeteriaat the start of the classes on Monday, killing 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor and 17-year-old Russell King Jr. and wounding?three others, police said.

"He had no emotion on his face, he was just shooting," a Chardon student told WKYC.

Travis Carver, another student present in the cafeteria at the time said the expression on T.J. Lane's face was "straight determination."

Second teen confirmed dead in Ohio school shooting

Terrified students turned to social media to console one another and find out more information. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

The suspect was taken into custody near his car a half-mile from the suburban Cleveland school after football coach Frank Hall chased him from the building, according to FBI officials.

The motive for the shooting, which took place while students were studying and eating breakfast, remains a mystery. Fellow students told local media the suspect was a quiet loner who may have been bullied.

Some witnesses told local media he appeared to deliberately target a table where a student who had started dating his former girlfriend was seated with friends, but Reuters could not immediately confirm that.

T.J. Lane was not a student at Chardon High School. He attended the nearby alternative school Lake Academy in Willoughby, which serves at-risk students. Students may have been referred to the school because of academic or behavioral problems.

'Good kid'
When asked about the suspect, his family's?lawyer called him a "good kid."

"By all accounts T.J. is a fairly quiet and good kid. His grades are pretty impressive," Farinacci said. "He's a sophomore. He's been doubling up on his classes with the intent of graduating this May. He pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about."

Some fellow students called the 17-year-old quiet and sweet, although others said he had a temper, the Plain Dealer reported.

"He would never really talk about his family," Haley Kovacik, who knew T.J. Lane, said. "But you can always tell he had a very sad look in his eyes all the time. He usually just kept to himself."

Kovacik said she never saw him get bullied, but said it could have happened, as he was "very quiet."

"He never really stood up for himself very much," she said.

His now-deleted Facebook page showed one picture of him bare-chested and glaring at the camera and another behind a huge teddy bear that bore a heart and the words "Be Mine," according to the newspaper.

Ian Sanborn and Travis Carver, who were both in the Chardon High School cafeteria when a teen gunman opened fire, talk to TODAY's Ann Curry about the harrowing experience.

He listed "primitive hunting" among his interests, the newspaper reported.

The suspect's family said they were struggling to comprehend what had happened.

"The family wanted me to convey to the citizens of Geauga County and Northeastern Ohio that the family is devastated by this most recent event," Farinacci said in the statement.

"They want to give their most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who passed and their continuing prayers are with all those who were injured."

The mother of a student in Chardon, who asked not to be identified, said her son knew the accused gunman.

"My son's reaction was 'this doesn't surprise me.' T.J. (Lane) was a nice sweet kid who was misunderstood and he probably cracked from being different," she said.

It is expected that T.J. Lane will be arraigned in juvenile court Tuesday afternoon.

The Real Skinny on Standing | Find Attorneys | Lawyer Referral ...

by Find Lawyers on February 27, 2012

Here's the Real Skinny on Standing and why it doesn't apply to traffic tickets. Standing is mainly a civil issue, not a criminal issue. The voluntaryists want you to believe the government needs to show injury or loss to give you a traffic ticket, but this is not true. You only need to show injury or loss to recover damages in a civil court. Fines for traffic violation are not damages, they are punishment for violation of law. Whether or not you believe the government should be able to punish its citizens for violating the law is an interesting topic for discussion, but it has nothing to do with standing, which is almost entirely a civil issue. If you need legal advice for beating a traffic ticket, you should consult a lawyer. You should not listen to YouTube videos that claim a person can beat any traffic ticket by making an argument in court that involves Standing or Corpus Delicti. The posters are not legal experts and their advice could cause you further legal trouble.

Invoxia unveils the AudiOffice, a $299 speaker dock for iDevices

The last time we heard from Invoxia, the company was showing off a desktop VoIP phone with iPad and iPhone docks, allowing you to use the familiar iOS interface to manipulate all the phone's controls -- mute, volume, speakerphone, et cetera. As Mobile World Congress kicks off, the company's back with a product that looks very similar, but does quite the opposite. Designed for business use, the AudiOffice isn't a standalone VoIP phone but rather, a speaker dock for your iDevices. Here, your sweet telephony comes courtesy of your iPhone, while Invoxia's hardware is mainly there to enhance the call quality, with the help of four wide-bandwidth speakers and two digital microphones. And though those docks were built with the iPad and iPhone in mind, you could, if you were so inclined, connect another device using the dock's USB socket or Bluetooth 2.1 radio. In addition to FaceTime, too, you can place calls through more OS-agnostic apps, such as Skype. The AudiOffice will sell for $299 -- quite pricey for what's essentially an iDevice dock -- but that's still far more affordable than the $599 the NVX 610 is fetching. We'll be back with hands-on photos soon enough, but in the meantime we've got pictures of the official sort below.

Romney Jabs at Santorum's Record in CNN Debate | FOX8.com ...

The Arizona Republican Presidential Debate

By Rachel Streitfeld and John Helton, CNN

MESA, Arizona ? Rick Santorum found that his position at the top of polls made him the biggest target in Wednesday?s CNN Republican presidential debate, possibly the last of the GOP primary and caucus campaign.

Mitt Romney, who has been front-runner off and on through the campaign but saw his momentum blunted by Santorum?s recent surge, went after the former Pennsylvania senator over his record in Congress, trying to shoulder past him before Tuesday?s primaries in Arizona and Michigan, which most polls show neck-and-neck between the two.

?Voting for the debt ceiling five different times without voting for compensating cuts,? said Romney, describing Santorum as a big spender in Congress. ?Voting to fund Planned Parenthood, voting to expand the Department of Education. During his term in the Senate spending grew by some 80% of the federal government.?

Santorum, who surged to the top of state and national polling after sweeping the February 7 contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, was sitting center stage next to Romney and was quick to fire back.

?When you look at my record of never having raised taxes ? Gov. Romney raised several hundred million dollars in taxes and fees in Massachusetts. I never voted to raise taxes,? Santorum said. ?Gov. Romney even today suggested raising taxes on the top 1%, adopting the Occupy Wall Street rhetoric. I?m not going to adopt that rhetoric.?

Santorum?s opponents joined together to attack a vote he made in support of larger bill that, in part, provided funds to Planned Parenthood.

?If you voted for Planned Parenthood, like the senator has, you voted for birth control pills,? Paul charged. ?And you literally, because funds are fungible, you literally vote for abortions because Planned Parenthood gets the money ? they have the money left over to do abortion.?

Romney followed up aggressively, saying Santorum had not backed away from the vote in a subsequent interview.

Santorum insisted he had always been clear that as president he would defund Planned Parenthood.

?I admit I voted for large appropriation bills and there were things in there I didn?t like,? he said, but explained he had also created a program that funded abstinence-based education in schools

The candidates confronted each other in a lengthy and contentious argument over the congressional process of earmarking, often derided as ?pork-barrel? spending.

?Congress has a role to play when it comes to appropriating money,? Santorum declared in a full-throated, detailed defense of the process ? one he said Romney had taken advantage of when he requested funds for the 2002 Olympic Games in Utah.

?I didn?t follow all of that,? Romney cracked after Santorum finished speaking. While criticizing Santorum for some of the earmarks he supported, Romney defended his request for Olympic funds.

?While I was fighting to save the Olympics, you were fighting to save the ?Bridge to Nowhere,? ? he said.

Santorum did not back down, telling Romney: ?You don?t know what you?re talking about.?

The former senator said Romney?s defense of that Olympic funding request amounted to approval of the earmarking process.

?What you just suggested as to how earmarks should work in the future is exactly how they worked in the past,? Santorum said. ?So I suspect you would have supported earmarks if you were in the United States Senate.?

Romney also came up with a new line of defense against Santorum?s repeated attacks on the health care plan passed in Massachusetts when he was governor as being the blueprint for Obama?s national health care law by attacking Santorum?s support of former Republican Sen. Arlen Specter against conservative challenger Pat Toomey. Specter later switched parties and voted for Obama?s health care law.

?If we had said ?no? to Arlen Specter, we would not have ObamaCare,? Romney told Santorum.

The two were seated next to each other at a table, flanked by Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and often turned to each other as they attacked.

While listening to Santorum?s criticism, Romney shook his head or looked slightly to the side with a pained expression on his face. Santorum raised his eyebrows at Romney?s attacks at him and looked off to the side as if he was running Romney?s words through his mind.

Meanwhile, at several points Gingrich was captured chuckling at the other candidates? statements.

The debate, hosted by CNN and the Republican Party of Arizona at the Mesa Arts Center, was the 20th in the campaign and the last before the candidates will share a stage before primaries in Arizona and Michigan on Tuesday, before Washington state holds a contest on March 3, and before 10 more states hold primaries or caucuses on Super Tuesday on March 6. And no more debates are scheduled. CNN canceled a debate in advance of Super Tuesday after Romney, Santorum and Paul pulled out.

The four last met on January 26 before the Florida primary. Romney went on to win big there and in Nevada, while Gingrich, who had just scored an impressive victory in South Carolina, faded fast.

While Romney and Santorum grew heated at times, Paul deflated the tension a bit when asked why he had labeled Santorum a fake in a television ad that attacked the former senator?s conservative credentials.

?Because he?s a fake,? Paul said.

That line drew cheers, laughter and boos, before Santorum assured moderator John King that he was real.

?Congratulations,? Paul responded.

A question on contraception gave Gingrich the opportunity to attack moderator King and a chance for agreement between Santorum and Romney.

When King related a viewer?s question on whether the candidates believed in birth control, Gingrich took immediate offense.

?You did not once in the 2008 campaign, not once did anybody in the elite media ask why Barack Obama voted in favor of legalizing infanticide. OK? So let?s be clear here,? Gingrich said, which brought applause from the audience. ?If we?re going to have a debate about who the extremist is on these issues, it is President Obama who, as a state senator, voted to protect doctors who killed babies who survived the abortion. It is not the Republicans.?

However, Santorum and Romney did reach general agreement on the budding controversy over the issue, as both bemoaned the number of American children born out of wedlock.

?How can the country survive if children are being raised in homes where it?s so much harder to succeed economically?? Santorum asked, but added he was speaking ideologically rather than advocating government intervention.

?Just because I?m talking about it doesn?t mean I want a government program to fix it,? he said.

Romney suggested the president should be ?willing to say? the best opportunity a parent could give his child is a mother and a father.

Paul, a former obstetrician, said government should not insert itself into a debate over contraception. But, likening a user of birth control to a gun owner, Paul said the problem was not the contraception pill but the ?immorality? of society.

?I think it?s sort of like the argument ? conservatives use the argument all the time about guns. Guns don?t kill, criminals kill,? Paul said. ?So, in a way, it?s the morality of society that we have to deal with. The pill is there and, you know, it contributes, maybe, but the pills can?t be blamed for the immorality of our society.?

Asked to use one word to describe themselves, Paul proudly replied, ?consistent.?

Santorum?s word was ?courage,? and Romney?s was ?resolute.?

The curmudgeonly Gingrich got a laugh when he described himself as ?cheerful.?

? CNN?s Marlena Baldacci and Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

Nuclear talks with Iran? Senators implore Obama to draw line in the sand.

The senators are urging Obama to demand that Iran suspend all of its uranium enrichment during any negotiations over its nuclear program, a position that could scuttle chances for the talks.?

As President Obama considers the ground rules he can live with for a resumption of talks with Iran on its nuclear program, a wary Congress is telling the White House: Accept no compromises.

Specifically, a bipartisan group of influential senators is insisting that Iran be required to verifiably suspend all of its uranium enrichment activity during any negotiations ? even though such a demand could sink prospects for a new round of talks.

In a letter addressed to Mr. Obama, a dozen senators representing both major political parties and a range of red and blue states say they ?strongly oppose any proposal that caps or limits sanctions against the Iranian regime in exchange for anything less than full, verifiable, and sustained suspension of all enrichment activities, including both 3 percent and 20 percent enrichment.?

Uranium enriched to 3 percent purity is used to fuel nuclear power plants, but Iran has also been enriching to 20-percent purity, setting off alarm bells among world powers. They worry Iran is stockpiling enough 20-percent-enriched uranium to make the ?breakout? leap to the 90 percent highly enriched uranium it would need for a nuclear weapon.

Iran counters that its nuclear program is for purely peaceful purposes, and that it is using the 20 percent enriched uranium to operate an aging, American-built research reactor near Tehran that makes isotopes for medical use.

The letter from the senators ? led by Democrat Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Republican Jim Risch of Idaho, and Independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut ? arose after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the European Union?s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, suggested Friday that talks between Iran and the so-called P5 +1 countries could resume soon. The P5 + 1 group includes the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany.

Iran last week sent a letter to Lady Ashton saying it was ready to resume talks on its nuclear program. But Iranian officials have also insisted that they will never agree to suspend all enrichment in exchange for talks.

The senators? tough stance reflects growing concerns among foreign policy hawks that the Obama administration could soften its position on Iranian enrichment in an effort to relaunch talks that were last held ? and which got nowhere ? more than a year ago.

Administration critics see a redrawing of the administration?s red lines on Iranian enrichment: They note that in 2009 Secretary Clinton flatly rejected Iran maintaining any enrichment capabilities, while in recent statements her position has become more nuanced.

BC-US--NFL Players Concussions-Lawsuit,1st Ld-Writethru, US

BC-US--NFL Players Concussions-Lawsuit, 1st Ld-Writethru,353Ex-NFL players sue league in La. over concussionsEds: Updates with additional details, quotes from lawsuit. Adds byline.By MICHAEL KUNZELMANAssociated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Nearly a dozen former NFL players living in Louisiana have sued the NFL, the latest players to accuse the league of failing to protect players from the risks associated with concussions.

Several former New Orleans Saints players, including John Fourcade, are among the 11 ex-players named as plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in New Orleans. The lawsuit says each of them has developed mental or physical problems from concussions or concussion-like symptoms.

Several similar suits blaming the NFL for concussion-related dementia and brain disease already have been consolidated in Philadelphia. More could be added. The NFL has vowed to vigorously defend itself.

Football helmet manufacturer Riddell Inc. also is named as a defendant in the lawsuit filed in New Orleans.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, accuses the NFL of ignoring players' concussion risks for years "despite overwhelming medical evidence that on-field concussions led directly to brain injuries and frequently had tragic repercussions for retired players."

"Wanting their players on the field instead of training tables, and in an attempt to protect a multibillion dollar business, the NFL has purposefully attempted to obfuscate the issue and has repeatedly refuted the connection between concussions and brain injury to the disgust of Congress, which has blasted the NFL's handling of the issue on multiple occasions," the lawsuit says.

A 2000 survey of more than 1,000 former NFL players found that more than 60 percent had suffered at least one concussion, while 26 percent had suffered three or more during their careers, according to the lawsuit.

"Those who had sustained concussions reported more problems with memory, concentration, speech impediments, headaches and other neurological problems than those who had not been concussed," the suit says.

The lawsuit claims the league has only recently taken action to address the problem.

The other plaintiffs are: Tyrone Hughes, Eric Hill, Curtis Baham, Raion Hill, Maurice Hurst, Treverance Faulk, Keaton Cromartie, Vince Buck, Charles Commiskey and Tyrone Legette. Wives of the players also are named as plaintiffs in the suit.

Fourcade, 51, was a quarterback for the Saints from 1987 to 1990 and played at Mississippi.

Movie Review: In Rampart the Only Match For Woody Harrelson's ...

I?ve never given much thought to the domestic life of a corrupt cop before. He spends his days unnecessarily roughing up punks or shaking down local business owners, but at night he might return to a warm, beautiful home and be most concerned that he?s losing his connection to his young daughters. Can a person be a nasty human being and a good father?

Los Angeles Police Officer Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) likes to think so. Actually, strike that: the question has never occurred to him. And it?s not because he isn?t aware of what an awful person he is. (?I?m not a racist,? he says when he?s investigated for the brutal beating of a black man. ?Fact is I hate all people equally.?) In his mind, he?s a soldier and the actions he takes ? however deplorable to others ? are his means of doing his duty as a police officer and a parent.

He will go to extremes to get what he wants, which includes his unique living arrangements.? He lives in the pool house of the home of his ex-wife and their daughter. Next door lives his other ex-wife (the sister of his first ex-wife) and their daughter. The group functions as a collective family unit. He occasionally sleeps with one of his exes, but generally maintains the sexual habits of a single man.

Women dominate his life. He cares deeply for his daughters, yet he has no problem treating a woman he picked up in a bar as trash immediately after the transactional business of their one-night-stand is completed. He always seems to consider himself the cleverest guy in the room, often using $10 words when he?s holding court?though he doesn?t quite get the meaning of some of them right. The guy is a mass of contradictions. He?s complicated, the movie really, really wants us to appreciate.

After Brown is placed on leave and subjected to an internal investigation following a violent outburst at a motorist, he comes to believe he?s been set up as a fall guy to take the heat off police department leadership, which is weathering its own major scandal (a scandal that goes mostly unexplained in Rampart). Maybe he has been set up, or maybe he?s just paranoid. Regardless, he makes a decision that digs him deeper into a hole, while refusing to simply resign as his superiors want.

Director Oren Moverman, who co-wrote the screenplay with crime novelist James Ellroy (LA Confidential), centers his film on a suitably fascinating character ? and Harrelson is perfect in the role ? but doesn?t give that character much to play against. Brown runs roughshod over everyone in his life and only his defiant teenage daughter Helen (Brie Larson) seems capable of giving him pause. He hooks up with a lawyer (Robin Wright) who is as screwed up in the head as he is, but the relationship goes nowhere and in their scenes together the movie feels as though it?s merely treading water.

When Brown learns of the unintended consequences of an action he?d taken years before, and of which he?d been proud, he drowns his feelings in drugs and sex. By that point I had tired of hanging around the guy, whose story wasn?t going much of anywhere.

Yet the film finds its footing in its final act, with Brown?s realization of how the life he?s chosen for himself has affected his daughters.

?I want you to know I never hurt any good people,? he tells them.

?What about us?? Helen asks the seemingly obvious question.

It turns out that question wasn?t quite so obvious to him.

Senate confirms Cuban-born judge to 11th Circuit (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The first Cuban-born judge to serve on the Atlanta-based U.S. appellate court was confirmed Wednesday by an overwhelming margin that said much about the way the Senate operates these days.

Despite strong support from both parties, including tea party favorite Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., the Senate had to break a filibuster to confirm U.S. District Judge Adalberto Jose Jordan by a 94-5 vote. The one-time clerk to now-retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is the newest member of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

This week, the nomination was held up by another tea party favorite, Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. He filibustered Jordan's nomination while demanding a vote on his proposed amendment ? to an upcoming highway bill ? to cut U.S. economic aid to Egypt pending the release of American pro-democracy workers held in that country.

Rather than grant Paul a vote on his amendment, the Senate voted Monday to force an end to his filibuster. Under Senate rules, a final vote on the nomination could not take place until Wednesday.

However, Paul's delay was only the latest development in a disagreement between the parties over the pace of judicial confirmations.

Jordan's nomination was sent to the full Senate in October by a unanimous vote of the Judiciary Committee. The seat he's filling was declared a judicial emergency by the policymaking body for U.S. Courts: basically meaning the appellate panel has been overwhelmed with court filings.

But none of that sped up the process.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., accused Republicans of stalling the nomination for months because of issues unrelated to the judge.

"The stalling, the delays, the obstruction, even the votes against ending the filibuster were all about something else, some collateral issue," Leahy said. "They should not have marred this process and complicated this nomination. They should not have delayed this moment when Cuban-Americans will see one of their own elevated to the second highest court in the land."

Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, blamed President Barack Obama for the delays. He said the president made an end run around the Senate by announcing recess appointments in January when ? Republicans argued ? the Senate was not in recess.

"We could have confirmed more nominees, had the president indicated that he would respect the practice and precedent on recess appointments," Grassley argued. "He would not give the Senate that assurance, so a number of nominations could not be confirmed."

Other key findings relate to physical activity, obesity, cannabis use and bullying

Canadian girls report higher levels of emotional problems and lower levels of emotional well-being and life satisfaction, while boys tend to experience more behavioural problems and demonstrate less prosocial behavior, a new Queen's University-led national study of youth health behavior shows. The study also emphasizes the importance of home, school, peers and local neighbourhood in the lives of young people. The varying interpersonal relationships that arise in these four different contexts may be critical for adolescent mental health.

"In examining the connections between contextual factors and mental health, one key theme emerges: Interpersonal relationships matter," says John Freeman, an associate professor of education and Director of Queen's University's Social Program Evaluation Group (SPEG). "No matter how mental health is measured and no matter what interpersonal relationship is concerned, adolescents with positive interpersonal relationships tend to fare better in terms of mental health."

The Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey has been coordinated every four years since 1989 by SPEG in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada and Health Canada. The study is supported by the World Health Organization and involves research teams from 43 countries in North America and Europe.

"The early years are a critical period during which a person's health and well-being can be strongly influenced," said Dr. David Butler-Jones, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer. "Investing in research that focuses on key health priorities and lets us hear directly from young people contributes to better informed policies, programs and practice to help young Canadians transition successfully to adulthood."

For the 2010 HBSC survey, SPEG researchers collaborated with Canada's Joint Consortium on School Health (JCSH), which includes representatives from provincial/territorial ministries of education and the federal/provincial/territorial ministries of health.

26,078 young Canadians aged 11 to 15 from 436 schools participated in this cycle of the survey, which focused on the mental health of Canadian school-aged adolescents. This year the researchers also asked a number of Canadian youth to comment on the study findings. These reflections have been incorporated into the final report.

Some key HBSC survey findings:

  • In contrast to their higher levels of emotional problems, girls report fewer behavioural problems and more prosocial behaviours than boys. However, for both boys and girls behavioural outcomes worsen across grades such that older students demonstrate more behavioural problems and show fewer prosocial behaviours. A similar pattern occurs with life satisfaction, in that it decreases across grades and is consistently poorer for girls than for boys.
  • Younger students are much more likely than older students to feel understood by their parents, while boys are substantially more likely than girls to agree that they are understood by their parents at all grades. However, the overall proportion of young people feeling understood by their parents today is higher than in early years of the survey, suggesting that youth today have more positive relationships with their parents than in the past.
  • Between 19 and 26 per cent of boys are physically active for at least 60 minutes on a daily basis, but only 11 to 20 per cent of girls achieve this same criterion.
  • More boys than girls see their body as too thin, while more girls than boys believe that their body is too fat. By Grade 10, 39 per cent of girls believe their body is too fat, an increase from 26 per cent in Grade 6 and 7. The percentage of girls who believe that their body is too fat represents a far greater percentage than girls who are overweight or obese.
  • 40 per cent of boys and 37 per cent of girls report using cannabis at least once. Binge-drinking and cannabis use show stronger negative relationships with mental health for girls when compared to boys.
  • Young people who are victimized tend to have high levels of emotional problems, while young people who bully tend to have the highest levels of behavioural problems. Young people who are involved in both bullying others and being victimized tend to have elevated levels of both emotional and behavioural problems, with this group of young people having the highest levels of emotional problems and the second highest level of behavioural problems.

Other Queen's contributors to the report are: William Pickett (Community Health and Epidemiology); Ian Janssen (School of Kinesiology and Health Studies); Wendy Craig (Psychology); Matthew King and Don Klinger (Education) and Frank Elgar (Institute of Health and Social Policy, McGill University).
