Tips And Techniques For Effective Self Help | Meet Aniko Giampietro

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Are you actively seeking a better life? Read this article for some tips on self improvement.

TIP! Find personal development books that are appropriate for your age and situation. A really good book on the subject may set you on a course that will change your life.

Sometimes a little risk could equal great happiness for you. Do not allow yourself to fear failure more than you desire success. Taking risks may take you out of your comfort zone, but it is not irrational to do so. If you take risks, chances are you will be happier.

TIP! An extremely important key to personal development is knowing what you want to do with your life. Choosing long-term goals will help you to gain the right perspective for finding success in life.

With any good personal development goal, you should be able to see the distance between your current state and the one you want to achieve. This is the best way to be able to set a course of direction to get there. By seeing your potential and where your life falls short right now, you set yourself up for success.

TIP! Everyone should strive to be the best that they can be. Passion leads to greatness, so be sure to be passionate.

Scrutinize your heart, soul and mind rather than being engrossed with your physical appearance. Some people are blessed with natural good looks or the wealth to purchase designer duds. It is your personality and character traits that are going to define who you are in life. Work to improve your inner beauty and self instead of concentrating on the superficial changes.

TIP! For many people, faith and love are the core components of personal development. This will help you focus on the things that are truly important.

Be respectful no matter how much, or how little, power the people you talk to wield over you. The treatment you show them is not a reflection of their character but of yours.

TIP! Strive to increase the time you spend working as much as possible in order to accomplish more. This can be achieved by taking frequent breaks from work.

A successful leader has the power to put their wishes into action, while also being humble of this ability. When rebukes are necessary, be gentle yet firm, and keep in mind that you must be able to serve to be able to lead effectively. The best leaders are virtuous and upright, since effective leadership requires great integrity.

The first step in changing is making a decision to change. Growth and improvement do not happen until you willingly embrace these changes.

TIP! Keep looking for new challenges you are interested in. These new challenges can open you up to new possibilities.

Look for reading material that inspires you and encourages you to be your best. In certain cases, this could take the form of religious volumes, in others, it could be a collection of historical quotations. Being able to return to these books to find words of encouragement when necessary can improve your state of mind, and permit you to deal with life?s tribulations better.

TIP! In your personal development journey, there is one thing that you must do. That one thing is you must choose to be an active person and live your life, not be a spectator.

Do not shop for comfort. If you spend your time doing some kind of a hobby instead of running up your credit card bills, you will find that you will not have those high credit card bills to stress out about. There will also be less clutter around your home to clean up.

TIP! If you are not able to achieve anything you wanted to, it is time to evaluate the situation seriously. Check online and find others whom share similar goals with you and find out what they are doing compared to what you?re doing.

People who are looking for personal development methods often make the mistake of setting goals that are too vague or too hard to target. Make sure that you set specific tangible goals. A specific goal will often achieve the desired results.

TIP! Always be ready to write down any ideas that you may have at any time or location. Carry some kind of paper with you at all times.

It shouldn?t be scary to make big changes in your life. Consider the benefits to your general well-being, and think of the happiness your life can have once you start taking charge of your life and changing it to be what you want it to be

US officials explain Libya attack intelligence

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. intelligence officials sought to explain Friday why the Obama administration's understanding of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi is "evolving."

Facing a barrage of Republican criticism about what the administration knew and when about the attack, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a statement Friday that laid out how officials came to understand the assault that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. At the same time, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations issued a statement explaining her early descriptions of the attack.

In the days immediately after the attack, the administration said it believed it was a spontaneous reaction to an anti-Islamic video that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad and ignited mob protests on U.S. embassies around the Middle East and in North Africa. Now, the administration has begun to call it a terrorist attack carried out by al-Qaida-linked militants and explain that it was a planned attack distinct from the mob protests in the region.

Republicans have seized on the Obama administration's changing narrative, saying the administration was too slow to label it a terrorist attack because, they said, the White House did not want to admit its policies had failed to defeat al-Qaida, and quell anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world.

"Throughout our investigation we continued to emphasize that information gathered was preliminary and evolving," DNI spokesman Shawn Turner's statement said.

"It remains unclear if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate. However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with, or sympathetic to al-Qaida," he said.

At the same time, a spokeswoman for U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice also sought to explain comments that Rice made early in the investigation saying there was no evidence the Benghazi attack was premeditated.

"During her appearances on the Sunday talk shows Sept. 16, 2012, Ambassador Rice's comments were prefaced at every turn with a clear statement that an FBI investigation was under way that would provide the definitive accounting of the events that took place in Benghazi," said Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. "At every turn Ambassador Rice provided ? and said she was providing ? the best information and the best assessment that the administration had at the time, based on what was provided to Ambassador Rice and other senior U.S. officials by the U.S. intelligence community."

Further intelligence may be slow to arrive. The FBI team that arrived in Libya last week to investigate the incident can't get to the scene of the attack because it is too dangerous, according to two law enforcement officials. The officials requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation.

Republicans have seen the Libya attack as an opportunity to attack President Barack Obama on one of his strengths, foreign policy.

Rep. Peter King, the New York Republican who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, said on CNN that Rice's explanation on the talk shows was "such a failure of foreign policy message and leadership" and "such a misstatement of facts" that "I believe she should resign."

In response, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement he was "deeply disturbed by efforts to find the politics instead of finding the facts in this debate." He called Rice "an enormously capable person."

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney accused the administration of being dishonest.

"I think it's pretty clear that they haven't wanted to level with the American people. We expect candor from the president and transparency," Romney told Fox News this week.

Recent intelligence reports indicated a force of more than 50 heavily armed extremists attacked the consulate, using gun trucks for added firepower, and establishing a perimeter to limit access to the compound and catch any Americans who might try to escape. A first wave of attacks set fire to the main building, forcing the Americans to flee to a fallback building a half mile away, where a second group of extremists attacked with mortar fire. Stevens died of apparent smoke inhalation when he was caught inside the main consulate building, becoming separated from the other fleeing diplomats.

Intelligence officials have focused their attention on Ansar al-Shariah, a Libyan militant group led by a former detainee at the U.S. military-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday that there has been a "thread of intelligence reporting" about groups in eastern Libya trying to coalesce but no specific threat to the consulate.

Dish Network to Offer Broadband Service | www.TodayInDillon.com

NEW YORK ? Satellite TV company Dish Network Corp. is launching a broadband Internet service that?s aimed at rural areas that don?t currently get high-speed Internet.

Dish Network said Thursday that the satellite broadband service, dishNet, will start at $40 per month for people who bundle it with certain Dish?s TV programming packages. The new service goes on sale Monday.

The company is targeting about 14.5 million Americans who, according to a Federal Communications Commission report, live in rural areas and don?t have access to high-speed Internet. In all, about 19 million people in the U.S. don?t have high-speed Internet service.

The dishNet service will offer download speeds of up to 10 megabytes per second. Dish said this is fast enough for typical Internet uses such as accessing social networks, music or video streaming and Internet telephone services.

6 ways to promote a healthy workspace | Dynamic Business ? Small ...

In the first series of the Small Business Success series AAMI presents instalment eight: ?Avoiding the 9 to 5 Health Hammer.?

For those spending more time in the office than they do at home it is imperative to create and maintain an optimal working space that?s complimentary to health, and to the general welfare of the working environment. Those who work from home are in a better position to manipulate their environment to cultivate health and safety around their work station, however there are still ways of optimising work place well-being, whether you are a sole trader working independently from your own office or a contractor sharing office premises.

When you spend almost 40 hours a week (or more) doing work in a repetitive manner it can become problematic to health, especially when it is work involving a computer. There are basic workstation steps that can act as preventative measures against office-induced injuries such as eye-strain, and repetitive strain syndrome.?

1. Optimising your workspace

How many times a day do you sit for more than one hour a day at your desk without standing up? Did you know that this may be problematic to your back, neck or shoulders? According to WorkSafe nearly 20 percent of all workplace related injuries stem from computer use and repetitive operational activities. These injuries are related to neck, shoulder, forearm, back, wrist and fingers.

Assuming that all chairs, monitors and monitor rests have an adjustment option, the worker should ensure that their thighs are parallel to the floor and their knees and elbow height to desk make a 90 degree angle to ensure that the back is not tilted.

Providing headsets and wireless mouses will ensure workers have less strain on their wrists and posture, allowing ease of use throughout their work day.

WorkCover also suggests that the desk layout should allow minimal strain, requiring less twisting movements on the back and should be around 6.25 square metres in size, allocating enough room for personal and work space.

Computer monitors should be at least 3-4 feet away from the seated position and a mouse should be positioned next to the edge of the keyboard to avoid arm strain.

2. Eye care

There is no hard evidence to suggest that using computers casually can be a harmful practice, however it is the prolonged usage and eye focusing which can cause problems such as red eye, headache, and shoulder and neck pain.

Strain on the eyes (Computer Vision Syndrome) is particularly problematic for the younger generations who have grown up using computers from an early age, as they have been raised using technology and looking at screens for prolonged periods of time. The best eye care method for looking at computer screens for long periods of time is to keep the eyes lubricated. This can involve frequent blinking, as we often forget to do this as often when looking at computer monitor. Also keeping eyes drops on hand can be handy for long periods of eye strain.

3. Hygiene

During the colder months a cold or flu virus can spread through an office environment like wildfire. And knowing how quickly germs can spread via touching equipment and sharing communal appliances, many instances of sickness can probably be avoided if workers remember to wash hands for at least 20 seconds when visiting the bathroom. Unwashed hands can often pass on germs to the mouth, face, and eyes throughout the day from desktop use, touching telephones and touching the face.

Antibacterial liquid or alcoholic wipes are recommended for wiping down hands and work spaces frequently as they eliminate much of the germs that may be hiding on fingers and residing on desktop spaces. These sanitisers are normally available as a wipe or in a bottle, and may also be handy for high traffic areas such as appliance handles.

4. Keeping hydrated

Surprisingly, drinking more water can actually keep you alert as the body is constantly being hydrated. If workers are engaging in frequent caffeine drinking, they are also advised to up their water intake as they will become dehydrated and therefore fatigued quickly.?

5. Lighting

If you?re in a position to manipulate the lighting of your workspace, take advantage of this. This is easier accomplished if working from home as you can experiment with dimmers and lamps. Also make sure that there is no light reflected on your monitor screen as it disturbs your vision. Screen glare can disturb the eyes in long term situations, so if you are seated near a window consider a tinted monitor screen to cut out sun light.

6. Rest

What most workers may not realise is that every hour of sleep received before midnight is actually worth twice as much those hours received after 12. Getting a set amount of sleep every night can ensure that you are working at your optimum capacity during the next working day and not lagging behind the computer. It is more a matter of going to bed around the same time each night than it is getting the same amount of hours every night.

When the small business owner wears the OH&S hat

Small business owners may not have access to an OH&S officer which means they inherit the tasks of overseeing the work safety of themselves and their staff. Even if you are only a sole person enterprise, you still need to mindful of safe workstation practices even if you think that it may not be relevant. RMIT University offers a free checklist for correctly setting up a workstation for chair, desk, computer, telephone, and desk stationery. If you are a small business owner seeking additional advice around office health visit WorkSafe.

With small businesses running on less core staff the level of productivity is less conducive when workplace health is compromised. A missed day of work is potentially highly disruptive if you are a sole trader. Long term office-related injuries can be avoided by paying attention to basic office procedures and monitoring the day-to-day health practices of workers.

Rapper Lil Wayne breaks Elvis Presley's Billboard record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rapper Little Wayne toppled Elvis Presley to become the new King of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart on Thursday, with a total of 109 songs, Billboard said.

Wayne, who also celebrated his 30th birthday on Thursday, surpassed Presley's count of 108 entries in the Hot 100 singles chart between 1958 and 2003, as an artist on rapper Game's latest track "Celebration." That track also features Chris Brown, Tyga and Wiz Khalifa, entering the chart at No. 82 this week.

The rapper, nicknamed Weezy, released his debut studio album "Tha Block Is Hot" in 1999. He has steadily grown to become one of the top names in U.S. hip hop, with hit singles including "Right Above It" and "6 Foot 7 Foot."

Wayne ranked fifth on Billboard's list of top-earning musicians in 2011, with an estimated $23.1 million.

Presley, the 'King' of rock'n'roll, held his title as the artist with the most Hot 100 singles for 45 years, with his single "Rubberneckin'" last appearing on the chart at No. 100 in 2003.

His career predated the inception of the Billboard 100 chart, which started in 1958, so some of his most famous hits such as "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Hound Dog" never made it onto the chart.

Both Wayne and Presley were overtaken by the cast of Fox's hit musical television show "Glee," who have had a total of 204 entries in the Hot 100 to date.

Stocks lower at midday as European shares tumble

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK --?Stocks are lower at midday as unrest simmers in Europe.?

Just before noon on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average is off 27 points at 13,430. the Standard & Poor's 500 index is down eight at 1,434. And the Nasdaq composite index is down 29 at 3,089.?

European stocks are having their worst day in months as unrest threatens to boil over in Greece, where deep budget cuts have eroded people's living standards, and in Spain.?

In the U.S., the median price of new homes sold in August rose by a record amount, while sales of new homes dipped slightly.

Stronger data on the U.S. housing market have helped insulate stocks in recent weeks from fears about the global economy. Stocks' other main source of support, the Federal Reserve's program to boost the economy by pumping money in, lost some luster Tuesday after a key Fed official expressed skepticism about the plan.?

"There was some optimism coming into the market, and that's usually when you're most vulnerable to sell-offs when there are negative headlines" like the Fed official's comments, unrest in Europe and weaker data about the U.S. economy, said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

Indexes had risen to levels they hadn't beat for months or years, Salamone said, creating "an almost perfect storm in terms of the vulnerability to short-term impacts.'

The dip in home sales hurt homebuilder stocks. PulteGroup Inc. fell 5.5 percent, KB Home 5.4 percent and Beazer Homes USA Inc. 4.7 percent.

European stocks were having their worst day in months as unrest threatened to boil over in Greece, where deep budget cuts have eroded people's living standards, and Spain, where citizens are resisting a likely bailout from international lenders. Earlier, Asian stocks closed lower.

The euro fell sharply against the dollar, and the price of oil dropped below $90 per barrel for the first time since early August.

Rising demand for lower-risk investments fed strong bids for U.S. Treasury debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.63 percent from 1.67 percent late Tuesday. A bond's yield falls as its price increases.

The moves come a day after the worst sell-off for the S&P 500 in three months. Charles Plosser, president of the Fed's Philadelphia branch, told an audience Tuesday that the Fed's effort to support the economy would likely fall short of its goals.

Stocks had rallied this summer before and after the Fed announced the plan to buy $40 billion in mortgage bonds each month until the economy strengthens. As doubts about it sink in, stocks are falling back to where they were when the deal was announced.

Below, Katie Stockton of MKM Partners provides discusses buying opportunities in the markets on CNBC.

Obama takes world stage to fend off Romney attacks

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Taking a detour from the campaign trail to the world stage, President Barack Obama sought on Tuesday to counter attacks on his foreign policy record from Republican rival Mitt Romney on everything from the Iranian nuclear standoff to U.S.-Israeli relations to the Arab Spring.

At the podium of the cavernous U.N. General Assembly hall six weeks before the U.S. election, Obama addressed both American voters and world leaders, as he defended his approach to global challenges that have started piling up in the final stretch of a close presidential race.

Obama's stern warning to Iran over its nuclear program was meant not only for the mullahs in Tehran and for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has pressed Washington to take a tougher tack, but also for pro-Israel voters who could help sway the election in battleground states like Florida and Ohio.

His challenge to the fast-changing Arab world to embrace democratic values of free speech and tolerance and reject the kind of anti-U.S. violence that has swept the region in recent weeks was a clear rebuttal to Republican accusations that he has apologized for America and weakened its global standing.

"I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day," Obama said, in a comment that could be read as referring to both flag-burning protesters in Islamabad and political opponents at home. "And I will defend their right to do so."

The line drew laughter from an audience that otherwise sat in mostly polite but stoic silence.

With Obama headed to battleground Ohio on Wednesday, and Romney arriving there on Tuesday for a bus tour with vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan, both presidential campaigns are likely to return to bread-and-butter economic messages.

But foreign policy and America's world standing have become more of a factor in the campaign during the last two weeks, as the Muslim world has been roiled by protests over a film mocking the Prophet Mohammed. The issues dominated the day.

Sensing an opening, Romney and Ryan have escalated their attacks on the president's handling of world events.

And after Obama's U.N. address, the Republican camp made clear they weren't letting up.

Eric Cantor, Republican majority leader in the House of Representatives, said Obama's foreign policy is "rudderless."

Paula Dobriansky, a Romney foreign policy adviser, was more specific.

"President Obama listed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Syria, and Iran as major challenges facing the international community," she said. "But those are three vital issues on which President Obama has unfortunately made no progress. The rhetoric doesn't match the policy."

SHORT CEASEFIRE

Before returning to the campaign trail, Romney and Obama observed a brief ceasefire in New York, with both men delivering statesmanlike speeches to Bill Clinton's global charity.

Romney told the Clinton Global Initiative, a foundation set up by the former Democratic president, that the United States should do more to encourage free enterprise as a way of creating jobs in the developing world.

The Republican largely avoided criticizing Obama in front of an audience that included many prominent Democrats. But his message that U.S. foreign aid frequently supplants private enterprise reflected one of his central complaints against the Obama administration.

"A temporary aid package can jolt an economy. It can fund some projects. It can pay some bills. It can employ some people some of the time," Romney said. "But it can't sustain an economy ? not for long."

Speaking at the same venue a few hours later, Obama outlined new steps to fight human trafficking.

Neither Romney nor Obama are likely to talk about foreign aid or human trafficking when they return to Ohio, a politically divided state that will be crucial in determining who wins the November 6 election.

With only six weeks until the vote, Romney is running out of time to gain ground on the incumbent president.

Obama widened his lead in the Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll to 7 percentage points over Romney, up 1 point from Monday. Obama now leads among likely voters 49 to 42 percent.

'DO WHAT WE MUST'

At the United Nations, Obama made his case in a statesmanlike way that struck a sharp contrast with the festive back-and-forth of campaign rallies that have come to occupy much of his time. But his message was still deeply infused with election-year politics.

Obama's annual visit followed protests over the anti-Islam video made in California that posed a huge dilemma for a U.S. leader who took office promising a "new beginning" with the Muslim world. He has also had to grapple with an escalating crisis in U.S.-Israeli relations over Iran's nuclear program and bloodshed in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad remains in power despite Obama's demand that he step down.

Honing in on Iran, Obama warned that United States will "do what we must" to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon and said time was running short for diplomacy.

That pledge fell far short of Netanyahu's demand that Obama set a "red line" that Tehran must not cross if it is to avoid military action, and it was unclear whether it would be enough to placate Netanyahu.

There was no immediate reaction to Obama's comments from Israeli leaders, with the country closed down for the holiest Jewish day of the year, Yom Kippur.

Obama also sought to reassure U.S. voters that he is doing everything he can to head off more violence like the recent September 11 attack in Libya that killed the U.S. ambassador and three of his colleagues.

Americans were stunned by recent images of U.S. flags again burning in the Muslim world, the focus of intense personal diplomacy by the president at the start of his term.

In his speech, he faced the delicate task of articulating U.S. distaste for insults to any religion while at the same time insisting there is no excuse for a violent reaction - a distinction rejected by many Muslims.

Obama defended his approach to the Arab Spring but offered no detailed solutions to an array of crises that threaten to chip away at a foreign policy record that his aides hoped would be immune from Republican attack during the run-up to Election Day.

Despite Obama's international woes, administration officials are heartened by Romney's own recent foreign policy stumbles and doubt that the president's critics will gain traction in a campaign that remains focused mainly on the U.S. economy.

With pressures building in the presidential race, Obama's brief final turn on the world stage left little doubt about his immediate priorities.

He skipped the customary one-on-one meetings with foreign counterparts but went ahead with the taping of a campaign-style appearance on ABC's popular television talk-show "The View."

However, after coming under Republican criticism for the tradeoff, the White House said Obama did meet briefly with Yemen's new president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Obama dropped in on talks he was having with a senior U.S. aide and thanked him for helping protect U.S. diplomats during recent unrest in the country.

Save Yourself A Hassle By Following This Home Improvement Advice

Arriving home to a home that needs fixes and is cluttered with the mess of unsuccessful home improvements is frustrating and stressful. Luckily, there are ways to easily improve your home. Make your home a place that you love coming home to with this advice!

To make your home safer, get together with your family and speak about the escape routes you?d take in an emergency. When something out of the ordinary or tragic takes place, many people panic or freeze. Having a innocuous escape route from your home during a disaster will ensure you that everyone will be safe. It?s important to discuss alternate routes out of the home with everyone, not just the most obvious routes.

Engage the services of an experienced chimney sweep on a routine basis. Whether you have an ornamental fireplace or a more functional heating system that burns wood or other fuel, proper ventilation and a clean chimney are vital. Otherwise, toxic fumes could be released into your home or fires could be sparked. So, add a chimney inspection to your home improvement list and ensure your safety.

A great tip for home improvement is securing the view of the professional before fixing a huge task by yourself. Sometimes, just that view can help you save money and time. Choosing not to consult a professional can mean disaster.

A good improvement to your home that is easy is too place in a system that filtrates the water. Usually, you can install one easily in just several hours. You can get filtration units that fit right under your kitchen sink.

Let your neighbors know ahead of time about any future home improvements you decide to make. It?s common for renovations to block parts of roads to make way for equipment and deliveries. Warning your neighbors will make them appreciative.

Is your flooring old? Though the process can be costly, it is worthwhile. This is the type of repair that will last for years and years.

Is your home a bit on the drafty side? Many products actually use air to insulate a home. You read that right?air! It is prefabricated a bit like the bubble wrap we use to secure packages. Plastic cushions are filled with air and these cushions are then used within the ceilings and walls. If you need superior insulation, this is an effective and low-cost way to solve the problem.

With regards to home improvements, you can easily improve your home?s energy conservation. Rather than plug your electronics into various outlets, just make use of a power strip. Power strips could be turned off when they are not in use. If you switch off your power strip whenever your electronics aren?t in use, you?ll cut down your energy costs.

Arriving at a beautiful home exactly the way you like it is great. By sticking with this advice, you?ll be healthy to do great on your home improvements and they will also be reliable. Make sure you keep at it one project and one day at a time. Staying committed, you can create your dream home.

Keeping accurate records will ensure that you take proper action whenever the need arises.

You can expand your site to include as many products as you would like, as long as you set it up in a user-friendly manner. Do not stray too far from the category in which your product lies. Functionality is key here.

Be sure to offer them free prizes or discounts when they do. By involving customers with your website, you will help them feel comfortable and begin to trust your site and products.

Monitor your results with visitor counters and other tools. Always keep testing graphics, ads, links and your checkout system for things that may create problems for your customers. Keeping websites simple and easy is something that webmasters sometimes do not think about. Multimedia programs like Flash and Silverlight are very tempting to site owners so many designers use them when building sites. A smart owner will remember that every site visitor may not be able to or want to use technology like this. Potential customers shouldn?t have to download software just to view and use your site.

Junkyard Find: 1972 Dodge Tradesman Custom Van | The Truth ...

Once the Detroit Big Three went to front-engined/snout-equipped cargo vans in the late 1960s and early 1970s, replacing the dangerous yet highly-maneuverable-in-alleyways forward-control/flat-nose vans that came before, those vans became much more practical for freeway driving (and family transportation). I still see plenty of 40-year-old Econolines, Beauvilles, and Tradesmen in junkyards these days, since these vans are so useful that most of them get flogged until they drop dead, but it (usually) takes one with some mid-70s-style customizing touches to make me break out the camera.
The Tradesman was the windowless ?molester van? cargo hauler, much better suited than the passenger-van Sportsman for airbrush murals depicting jousting knights battling Aztec kings in a zebra herd at the Mars Base.
The most basic customization job on these vans, back when The Sweet was big and groovy chicks in tube tops alternated bongloads of Panama Red with swigs of Boone?s Farm, involved the application of circular bubble windows and some upholstery in the cargo area. If you wanted to increase the odds of enticing those groovy chicks into your van, you needed the airbrush mural, a quadrophonic 8-track sound system, and maybe a wood-burning stove.
I was in grade school back when the custom-van craze reached its zenith, and even then most people thought they were pretty goofy. I wanted a Porsche 914, not a custom van, when I was 8. And yet? I?m slaving away on my own custom van project now.

US State Dept. blasts CNN report on Stevens' diary

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? CNN reported on the personal journal of slain American ambassador Christopher Stevens over objections from his family, a State Department spokesman said Saturday.

The news channel, in a story posted online Saturday, said that it found a journal belonging to Stevens four days after he died in a Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Three other Americans also were killed.

CNN broke a pledge to the late ambassador's family that it wouldn't report on the diary, said State Department spokesman Philippe Reines, a senior adviser to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In a blistering statement, Reines called CNN's actions "indefensible."

The channel said in the story online that it took "newsworthy tips" from Stevens' diary and confirmed them with other sources. Citing an unidentified source "familiar with Stevens' thinking," CNN said that the ambassador was concerned about security threats in Benghazi and a "rise in Islamic extremism."

In a statement Saturday, CNN defended its use of the journal's contents and asked "why is the State Department now attacking the messenger."

"CNN did not initially report on the existence of a journal out of respect for the family, but we felt there were issues raised in the journal which required full reporting, which we did," the channel said.

The public has a right to know what CNN learned from "multiple sources" about fears and warnings of a terror threat before the Benghazi attack, the channel said, "which are now raising questions about why the State Department didn't do more to protect Ambassador Stevens and other U.S. personnel."

Stevens' family was informed within hours about the discovery of the journal, a hard-bound book that included seven handwritten pages. It was returned to them via a third party, according to CNN's online story.

An Italian official took control of the diary from CNN in Benghazi at the State Department's request, and it is en route back to Stevens' family, the department said.

"Given the truth of how this was handled, CNN patting themselves on the back is disgusting," Reines said in his statement.

"Whose first instinct is to remove from a crime scene the diary of a man killed along with three other Americans serving our country, read it, transcribe it, email it around your newsroom for others to read" and then call the family?" Reines asked.

In a phone call with the Stevens family, CNN "agreed to abide by the clear wishes of the Stevens family, and pledged not to use the diary or even allude to its existence until hearing back from the family," Reines said.

But four days later, "they just went ahead and used it," he said.

The diary was first mentioned on-air Friday by Anderson Cooper, following previous CNN reports that Stevens feared he was on an "al-Qaida hit list" but did not mention the journal. Cooper said that some of the information in the reports was based on Stevens' personal journal, which he said CNN came across in its reporting.

In its online story, CNN said it found the journal on the "floor of the largely unsecured consulate compound where he was fatally wounded."

Asked to comment on CNN's report that Stevens was concerned about a "hit list," Reines referred to a news conference last Thursday at which Clinton was asked about it.

"I have absolutely no information or reason to believe that there's any basis for that," Clinton had said.

Chee Soon Juan ? The Man and his Beliefs ? Part I

Published by The Online Citizen on September 24, 2012

By Kumaran Pillai & Leo Khaw??

This is part 1 of a 4 part series -

Part I:???? Chee spoke about his brand of politics and why he chose a different strategy from the other opposition parties.?

? Part 2: ??? Chee?s views on the judiciary and about his moral consciousness.

Part 3:? ?? Is democracy a western philosophy or a Universal Principle? Can it be applied to Asian countries? Is there any evidence of Asia having practiced democracy in its early civilizations?

Part 4: ? ? What is the meaning of being socially liberal? Where Chee and SDP stand in their economic philosophies

The re-entry of Chee Soon Juan in local politics

Dr Chee Soon Juan, the caricature of opposition politics in Singapore is seldom portrayed in a positive light. Yet, he never fails to have a sparkle in his conversation about what the future holds. I caught up with him to discuss about his plans, his future, a little bit about his past and particularly about his proposal get out of bankruptcy.

His political strategy of going for broke, quite literally, has brought him into financial straits. Some have questioned his wisdom of doing this, while others think that a more subdued approach like how some of the other leading opposition figures have done would have been better.

I have often wondered if he knew what he was signing up for when he decided to enter politics twenty years ago. Whether politics was on his radar screen, how he got interested in politics, his rise to fame or infamy as some would have it? He has certainly paid a big price, a political one at that, which he needs to overcome in the next few years to establish himself as a player.

Below is the first of a four part series. It is an eye opener if you?ve not known anything about this man. Read it, and find out for yourself if the media has done justice to him, his ideas and philosophy.

?

KP:???? You have been in politics for over twenty years and it has been a very rocky ride. They have called you names, bankrupted you and made life extremely difficult for you. Yet, you have persevered. What keeps you going all these years?

CSJ: ??? The worst thing that can happen to any politician is to be ignored. If you?re ignored, it really means you are not doing your job right. In fact, they call you all these names because you are getting under their skin and they just don?t like it. Autocrats don?t know how to react to constructive criticism other than to? call you names.

In an autocratic system they also control the mass media and they may succeed with the whole name-calling part and smearing you for the time being. But, you know, you?ve got to persevere.

If you understand autocratic systems, and have some understanding of history, you'll find that people have been worse off than what they have done to me. Some of these people have been imprisoned, maligned, tortured and in some cases even killed! The word then is perseverance. Change doesn?t come without persistence and perseverance. And if we forget that, we won?t achieve what we?ve set out to do.

So look, all these years, they may think that they have gotten the better of me, and they seem to be winning, but you know that freedom and justice finally comes through.

?

KP:???? Prior to entering politics, you were a lecturer.? You owned a landed property, you were financially stable, and had a stable career.? Then it started going downhill because of your involvement in politics and your political beliefs. Do you have any regrets?

CSJ: ??? I?ve lost a lot, but I don?t see the losses in terms of finances. Sure, life has been hard but I never really regretted it.

I really enjoyed research work and I was getting publications into major journals.? In fact, I had one of my papers published in the SMJ, Singapore Medical Journal.? But, that?s another story. That?s one of my strengths and I really enjoyed it. So, to a certain extent, yes I do miss that!

But, when you compare it to what needs to be done ? and you?re talking about an entire society ? if there was no one speaking up, things can go very wrong very quickly. So, in that sense, no, I haven?t looked back and said that joining the SDP was something I shouldn?t have done.

There were difficult times, nonetheless, when I wished things were a little better.? But, that?s when I tell myself that anything that?s worth doing, is never easy.?

?

KP:???? What is your definition of success?? Would you say that success is only limited to electoral success or do you have a broader definition of success?

CSJ:???? I have never seen getting into parliament as the endpoint that is not what I perceive as success.? If we?ve not reformed the system, whereby there are proper checks and balances, where the media is not controlled where labour unions are free to form and organise, then, we haven?t achieved anything at all!?

We have just seen autocrats being displaced by another bunch of autocrats and history is just repeating itself.? So, for me at least, success means when we get into the position whereby the ruling party or the government is part of the story and not the story. When we have civil society representing the people or segments of the people and when we have a strong opposition, able and willing to take over the government? That is my definition of success.

?

KP: ??? Compared to the other political parties, you have taken a different tack. Do you think being more compliant would have been more successful in terms of getting a seat in parliament?

CSJ: ??? I cannot speak for them; I can only speak for myself.? If you?re a keen observer, you should be able to compare and contrast. We are not going to get anywhere if all we do is to rely on elections to bring about democratic change.?

In a democratic system, you have the media to report fairly on both sides. You look at what?s happening in the UK; you look at what?s happening in the US right now, both incumbent and the challenger get a lot of coverage in the main stream media. We hear about their views, on their policies, on their strategies and so on.

I?m talking about a fair media. That doesn?t exist here in Singapore. How do you begin to fight an election when half the people out there, in fact, the overwhelming majority out there, don?t know what?s going on?

?I challenge you to go out and do a survey right now. Has anybody heard of my book ?Democratically Speaking?? The news has been going around on the internet but the newspapers are completely silent.

So how would people know? And if they don?t know, how do you expect them to go to the voting booth; and say ?yes,? I think this party makes more sense than that party?s policy, that this is what I subscribe to and I think it?s better for our society and country, and then vote accordingly.

In a democratic society, political parties can hold a public assembly so that we can go out and talk to the people. In Singapore, if we walk into a university, NUS for example, and ask students to organise an event so that we can talk to young voters, we?ll get stopped. That limits our ability to reach out.? Honestly, how do we ask them to vote for us? So, election in, election out, the PAP "wins".

Now, when people don?t know what the issues are, about how PAP is intimidating us, about our lack of civil liberties, about our economic issues and problems, about our over-reliance on cheap foreign labour and GDP growth at all costs, then how do you expect them to make an informed choice when they vote?

That?s how PAP gets the mandate all the time. What I?m trying to say is: let us be smart about this. Where is the problem? The problem is that we don?t have our freedom and that includes a free media. We don?t have a free press that?s why the PAP gets a free ride into parliament all the time. No, they are not held accountable! Nothing is transparent here.

We have this big problem! If we have a problem, let's resolve it by getting to the root cause. Once all these things are taken care of, we don?t have to worry about elections. The candidate that makes the most sense, the candidate that can appeal to most, the best candidate gets elected into the government.

And on that score, I am absolutely confident that the kind of policies that we?ve been advocating, the people will understand it and when they know it, when they get to hear it, they'll support us.

We don?t have resort to jailing people, we don?t have to shut them up to win elections.

?

Chee spoke in a soft but firm voice. He spoke with conviction about his beliefs. He is there as a reminder of the artificial boundaries, or OB markers that have been setup by the PAP. They need to be challenged, he says, and overcome in order to reach a society that is free from the political, social and economic domination of a single party.

We went on to speak about a lot of other things, like the media, the judiciary and the economy, which will be covered in the other parts of this series.

Iran?s Revolutionary Guard says expects Israel to launch war

Yeganeh Torbati
Reuters
September 22, 2012

(Reuters) ? Israel will eventually go beyond threats and will attack Iran, the commander of Iran?s Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying on Saturday.

As speculation mounts that Israel could launch air strikes on Iran before U.S. elections in November, Mohammad Ali Jafari told a news conference that the Jewish state would be destroyed if it took such a step.

?Their threats only prove that their enmity with Islam and the revolution is serious, and eventually this enmity will lead to physical conflict,? Jafari said when asked about Israeli threats to strike Iran?s nuclear facilities, the Iranian Students? News Agency (ISNA) reported.

?We are making all efforts to increase our defensive capabilities so that if there is an attack ? we could defend ourselves and other countries that need our help with high defensive capabilities.?

Military-style tactics seen in U.S. Consulate siege

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The heavily armed extremists who laid siege to the U.S. Consulate in Libya used military-style tactics that may have steered Americans toward a waiting ambush, U.S. officials said Friday as they pieced together details about how the compound was overrun.

U.S. intelligence indicates that 50 or more people, many of them masked, were responsible for the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Gun trucks provided added firepower. The attackers set up a perimeter, controlling access in and out of the compound. A first wave of attacks sent the Americans fleeing to a fallback building, where a second group of extremists beset them with precise mortar fire.

Intelligence reports were still coming in, but officials told The Associated Press that what may have initially seemed like a protest over an anti-Islam movie that had spun out of control now showed the hallmarks of a more sophisticated operation.

In a country coming off a civil war, a level of battlefield savvy does not prove the attack on the compound was planned well in advance. How much planning went into the operation and whether it could have been detected or prevented remain unanswered questions, officials said.

The attacks killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, diplomat Sean Smith and two former Navy SEALs, who U.S. officials said were security officers guarding diplomatic officials. Stevens was visiting Benghazi from Tripoli to preside over the opening of an "American Space" cultural center.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss intelligence reports. They stressed that even now authorities do not have a clear understanding of exactly what happened in Benghazi. FBI agents from New York and Washington were in Libya investigating the attack.

"What happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday. "And we will not rest until we have tracked down and brought to justice the terrorists who murdered four Americans."

Officials have not singled out one responsible group, but have focused their attention on Ansar al-Shariah, a Libyan militant group led by a former detainee at the U.S. military-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Since the civil war that ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year, the country has been awash with rebels, militias and terrorists. Weaponry is easy to come by, both from the former regime, from weapons depots looted during the war, and from foreign powers that armed the rebellion. The origin of the weapons used in the assault on the U.S. compound was unclear, officials said.

Whether the attack was premeditated carries both political and intelligence significance.

From an intelligence standpoint, the longer an operation was in the works ahead of the attack, the more the U.S. government will face scrutiny for not anticipating and preparing for it.

Politically, Republicans have accused President Barack Obama's administration of misreading the assault as an outgrowth of Middle East demonstrations over an American-made Internet video insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad. They have also criticized the protection of the consulate, particularly since the attack fell on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a date when authorities are normally on alert for attacks.

White House spokesman Jay Carney has said there was no evidence the attack was premeditated. Obama has said extremists used the protests as an excuse to attack.

A spontaneous protest that turns violent is harder to predict and respond to.

"The intelligence agencies are still not confident enough to represent to us whether it was planned in advance or taking the opportunity of a spontaneous protest," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Friday.

Investigators say some of the people involved have a "hodgepodge of affiliations with multiple militant groups," making it hard to hold one particular militia or movement responsible, said a senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to be quoted publicly describing the investigation.

Wanis al-Sharef, who was Libya's deputy interior minister until he was fired after the attacks, said a small group of lightly armed gunmen were the first to gather outside the compound. They were then joined by a crowd of civilians protesting the film. Finally, a larger group of heavily armed men arrived with gun vehicles and grenade launchers. That final group was responsible for the siege.

Ansar al-Shariah has repeatedly denied being any part of the attack, but eyewitnesses and security officials said the group's militiamen were among the gunmen who joined the demonstration outside the compound. The group claimed its fighters were only in the Benghazi area providing security at Jalaa Hospital. But that's more than three miles from the U.S. compound, which lies on the outskirts of the city in a rural area.

One witness said he was detained by Ansar al-Shariah members during the protest because he was taking pictures of one of their leaders.

Whoever they were, the attackers stormed the main building and set it on fire. One U.S. official described the militants striking the front of the building first, distracting security, while a second group struck then from the rear. Many people escaped and fled to an annex to the east.

About an hour after the assault began, American and Libyan forces retook control of the compound and brought everyone to the annex. Rescue teams headed their way.

Intelligence indicates the gunmen broke off into teams to block certain roads away from the compound, officials said. Whether that changed the route or otherwise influenced how the Americans moved through the streets remains unclear, but one U.S. official said the tactic was being looked at as an indication of battlefield strategy and sophistication.

As the Americans waited to be rescued from the annex, that building came under mortar fire. Mortars are short-range bombs that launch in high arcs. Aiming them can be a matter of trial and error. But U.S. officials said mortars were landing directly on the roof of the annex.

That, officials said, indicated an experienced fighter, a well-planned assault or both.
