A court hearing Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012 will examine Holmes' relationship with a University of Colorado psychiatrist to whom he mailed a package containing a notebook that reportedly contains violent descriptions of an attack. His attorneys say Holmes is mentally ill and that he sought help from psychiatrist Lynne Fenton at the school, where he was a Ph.D. student, until shortly before the July 20 shooting. CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? The suspect in the Colorado shooting rampage tried unsuccessfully to call his university psychiatrist 9 minutes before he opened fire during a Batman movie premiere, defense attorneys revealed in court Thursday.

James Holmes placed the call to an after-hours number at a hospital at the University of Colorado, Anschutz campus, where psychiatrist Lynne Fenton could be reached, defense attorney Tamara Brady said.

It wasn't clear why he called Fenton, and she wasn't immediately available to talk to him. Holmes, 24, is accused of opening fire during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.

The detail about the call came out during a hearing about his relationship with Fenton, to whom he mailed a package containing a notebook that reportedly contained violent descriptions of an attack.

Prosecutors asked the judge to let them review the notebook as part of their investigation, while defense attorneys argued it was inadmissible because it was protected by doctor-patient privacy laws.

Judge William B. Sylvester ruled that an ongoing doctor-patient relationship did exist between Fenton and Holmes, but he scheduled a Sept. 20 hearing to revisit the notebook issue.

Thursday's three-and-a-half-hour hearing was the longest yet that Holmes has attended. He appeared to pay close attention to the proceedings and smiled at least once as he leaned toward his attorney. Holmes had a light moustache but was otherwise clean-shaven, and his hair was blond and orange.

Brady brought up the call placed by Holmes to show Fenton's doctor-patient relationship with him was ongoing. During questioning, Brady asked the psychiatrist if she could be reached at that after-hours number, to which Fenton replied she could.

Brady then asked: "Do you know that Mr. Holmes called that number 9 minutes before the shooting started?"

Fenton responded, "I did not."

Prosecutors noted Holmes also had Fenton's office phone number. He apparently did not try to reach her there.

Fenton testified that she last met with Holmes on June 11, and that she believed they had no doctor-patient relationship by July 19, the day prosecutors say Holmes mailed the notebook. She also said she contacted a campus police officer after meeting with Holmes on June 11.

"I communicated with (the officer) to gather more information on this case and also communicate my concerns," Fenton said.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson asked Fenton what information she wanted from police, but Brady objected and the judge barred the question.

Fenton said she received a voicemail from a defense team investigator two days after the shooting advising her Holmes had sent her a package. She contacted her attorneys and did not see the package, which was discovered in a mailroom July 23.

University spokeswoman Erika Matich said the school would have no comment on Fenton's testimony, including any details about her contact with campus police.

"Dr. Fenton's testimony stands for itself," Matich said.

Meanwhile, the University of Iowa released records showing it rejected Holmes from a graduate neuroscience program last year after he visited campus for an interview and left the program director bluntly warning colleagues: "Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances."

It was unclear why Holmes' application was denied, and university officials wouldn't elaborate. But the application response was yet another window into a complex young man who was viewed as both brilliant and deeply troubled before the July shooting.

Holmes applied to the Iowa program in late 2010 and was given an interview Jan. 28, 2011, university records showed. In his application, he painted himself as a bright student interested in improving himself and helping the world with a career in scientific research.

But two days after Holmes' interview, neuroscience program director Daniel Tranel wrote a strongly worded email urging the admissions committee not to accept him to the school.

"James Holmes: Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances," wrote Tranel, a professor of neurology.

Psychology professor Mark Blumberg followed up with a separate email two days later to say he agreed with Tranel about Holmes, one of three students Blumberg interviewed. He recommended admission for the other two.

The emails are among 12 pages of records the university released about Holmes in response to public records requests filed by The Associated Press and other news outlets.

None of the documents further explain why Holmes' application was denied. University spokesman Tom Moore said Thursday that Holmes was academically qualified but officials did not see him as a "good personal fit for our program." He declined to elaborate.

Blumberg said in an email Thursday that he has no specific recollection of Holmes, noting officials interview many applicants each year. Tranel was not granting interview requests Thursday, a spokesman said.

Francesca Reed, marketing and social media chair of the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals, reviewed the university's emails for the AP and said it was clear that Holmes left school officials with a very negative impression during the interview. But she noted that could have been the result of anything from his demeanor to his research interests.

"People are going to look at this and start to say, 'He must have displayed some behavior that was a red flag," she said of Tranel's email regarding Holmes. "But if this shooting incident didn't happen, people would look at it differently. Without being on that committee, it's hard to pass judgment."

Admissions officials have no obligation to report potentially disturbed behavior from prospective students unless it amounts to a direct threat, said Reed, who also is director of graduate admissions at Marymount University in Arlington, Va.,

Holmes later enrolled as a first-year Ph.D. student in a neuroscience program at the University of Colorado, Denver. He withdrew June 10.

His rejection from the Iowa school stands in contrast to his previously released application to a similar program at the University of Illinois, where he was offered admission with free tuition and $22,000 per year but declined to enroll.

Holmes said on his Iowa application that he also was applying to Texas A&M, Kansas, Michigan, Alabama and Colorado. He wrote that he had a thirst for knowledge and wanted to study the "science of learning, cognition and memory."

"I have always been fascinated by the complexities of a long lost thought seemingly arising out of nowhere into a stream of awareness," he wrote. "These fascinations likely stemmed from my interest in puzzles and paradoxes as an adolescent and continued through my curiosity in academic research."

Holmes added that he was passionate about neuroscience and would bring "my strong moral upbringing" to the program.

Football: Black Friday: NFL teams trim rosters to 53 / Who should Lions pick up thread

Yes I am saying that. Many if the guys that are getting released today are back end roster guys that play special teams. That or they are old vets making one last run. For instance, while the Lions need help at CB, there is not going to be anybody released today that would step right in and play a role on this team. When looking at the roster I see Houston, Bentley, Lacey, Barnes, and a 5th guy as our CBs. Nobody that gets cut today will be marginally better than the guys that we cut this afternoon. In fact, the guy I have season tickets with and I were talking yesterday about how it will be difficult for the Lions to sneak some players through waivers onto our practice squad, Travis Lewis being an example. Where this team will get better is by making some sort of trade, because like you said, some teams have depth at areas where other teams are weak, and those teams aren't looking at cutting the better part of their depth, they are looking to make a trade, and if they can't the weakest man gets cut. In most cases, the weakest man won't contibute more than the 5th man at a position.

But that is where I fundamentally disagree with you. Take the Lion Dline which is said to have great depth. The Lions may cut someone who can contribute or has great ability. But there isn't anyplace for them here. That guy who gets cut might be traded to someplace that has a need for depth there. That team could just as well wait and want to see if they can take someone without giving up a pick, even if it's only a 7th. Some teams just don't want to trade picks.

You have to look down the road as well as the next Sunday.

So what if you pick up a guy near the end of his career say at defensive back. They need help. This team is supposed to make a run at another playoff spot. You aren't going to try to strengthen a glaring weak spot just because the guy didn't make a team? There are times where you have to take a honest look and see if the guy is better than what you have. There are times you are trying to get by for a season to be able to address it better next off season. You can't fix everything at once.

Reverse it, maybe a team is set in the defensive backfield, but brought in guy who just shows something during the preseason. The Lions shouldn't take a look to see if he might be a better fit than what they have now and can grow into what they need?

There is no way in hell the Lions have the best depth at every position in the NFL. Teams are going to cut guys who could help them, just just this season and some long term. It takes a great management team to find those guys and maximize the returns.

Using Fertilizer Wisely Could Help Feed 9 Billion People

News | Energy & Sustainability

Farmers in the U.S. and China should use less fertilizer, freeing it up for application where such nutrients can do the most good

Can the world's existing farmlands provide enough crops to satisfy the hunger of the nine billion people?up from seven billion currently?that demographers predict will be living on the planet by the mid-21st century? Or will more and more forests and other ecosystems have to be cleared to feed all the extra mouths? A new study, published in Nature on August 30, suggests that increasing deforestation could be avoided provided farmers made better use of water and nutrients on land currently under cultivation around the globe. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

The central premise of the new analysis is that intensifying agriculture where it already exists is the key to preserving a balance between farming and forests. To do that, the researchers from McGill University in Montreal and the University of Minnesota (U.M.) analyzed the so-called yield gap. That's the difference between what the highest yielding farm or area within a given region can produce?for example, corn?compared with what the average yield is. The difference between this best-practice farm and the average farm is the yield gap.

The researchers then employed national and regional agricultural data from outfits such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Fertilizer Industry Association to determine the root causes of these yield gaps. Simply by improving fertilizer application and irrigation, the researchers find that global yields of corn, wheat and rice?the three main staple crops?could be increased by 64 percent, 71 percent and 47 percent, respectively.

"We are not claiming to diagnose the exact management practices needed on any particular plot of land," explains research fellow Nathan Mueller, who led the study from the U.M.'s Institute on the Environment, because local factors such as soils and weather can play an important role. Instead, the goal is to identify what practices might help close yield gaps at the regional or even global level and highlight those areas most in need of intervention.

That list includes the U.S. Great Plains and China, where more fertilizer is used than is strictly necessary. For example, American farmers apply so much fertilizer on Midwestern corn fields that much of it ends up running off, ending up in the Mississippi River and, ultimately, reaching the Gulf of Mexico. There the copious fertilizer fuels a bloom of algae and other microscopic plants that then die. Microbes that consume the dead plants also use all the oxygen available in surrounding waters, creating a vast "dead zone" that is devoid of sea life?an unfortunate side effect of the demand for more maize.

Lessening fertilizer use in the U.S. and China would free up nutrients to be applied to fields in eastern Europe and western Africa with no detriment to American or Chinese people. As it stands, the researchers estimate that some 11 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizer and five million metric tons of phosphate could be saved annually at present without diminishing current yields. Those savings then could be applied to underachieving areas.

HBO Go now supports Jelly Bean, forgets to support the Jelly Bean-running devices

Nexus 7

The HBO Go app today got an update to support Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, as well as "performance enhancements and bug fixes." Unfortunately, it doesn't actually support any devices that are actually running Jelly Bean. Go figure.

As you can see above, you still can't install HBO Go to the Nexus 7 from Google Play. Or, on a stock Galaxy Nexus -- also running Jelly Bean.

We're hoping HBO just needs to flip the permissions switch in Google Play to allow the devices that actually are officially running the version of Android it now officially supports. But until then, we're just gonna stick to Netflix, we guess.

Sony May Be Planning a Movie About the Video Game Console Wars

playstation-xbox-slice

2010?s The Social Network proved that, with the genius pairing of an incredibly talented screenwriter (Aaron Sorkin) and director (David Fincher), a movie about something as trite as Facebook could be compelling, relevant, and entertaining.? With the success of that film still lingering, Sony may be looking at giving the same kind of treatment to another business-centered, ?behind-the-scenes? film about a uniquely modern luxury: video games.

Battles have been waged in boardrooms for decades between rival video game console companies, with Microsoft and Sony currently duking it with the Xbox and PlayStation, respectively.? Now word comes that Sony may be developing a feature film to tell their side of this ?Console Wars? story.? Hit the jump for more.

playstation-3The folks over at Fusible (via /Film) noticed that Sony has registered a number of domain names this week with titles like ConsoleWarMovie.com and TheConsoleWarsMovie.com, which seems to suggest that they?re working on some sort of feature film about the so-called ?console wars.?? In Contention?s Kris Tapley confirmed that he?s heard rumblings about such a film, specifically described as ?a Social Network of video games.?

Though Sega and Nintendo fought for control over the gamer marketplace back in the 1990s, the current console war is between Microsoft?s Xbox and Sony?s PlayStation.? Nintendo is still an incredibly popular company, but they?ve carved out a niche market for themselves doesn?t have a ton of overlap with the games for Xbox or PlayStation.

I assume there?s a tantalizing backdoor history of the goings-on at both Microsoft and Sony over the years, and it?s not unreasonable to assume that there?s a pretty good story in there somewhere.? What I find slightly disheartening, though, is the fact that Sony Pictures is the studio that?s looking to put this film together.? We can?t exactly expect an objective point of view from the company that also has a vested interest in which console ?wins? the marketplace.

xboxThere has been no official confirmation from Sony or Microsoft concerning the development of a feature film focusing on the console wars, but it sure seems like Sony Pictures is up to something. ?Hopefully we hear more solid information soon. ?Below is a list of all the domain names that Sony registered.? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts regarding a ?Console Wars? movie.

Republicans nominating Romney, blasting Obama

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Making up for lost time, Republicans streamed into their storm-delayed national convention Monday to certify Mitt Romney's nomination for the White House and tear into President Barack Obama in a close race for the White House in dreary economic times.

Delegates cheered every mention of Romney's name in a ritual roll call of the states certain to seal the results of last winter's brutal primaries and caucuses.

The mocking of Obama began almost instantly from the podium at a convention postponed once and dogged still by Hurricane Isaac. The Democratic president has "never run a company. He hasn't even run a garage sale or seen the inside of a lemonade stand," declared Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican Party.

To propel Romney and ticketmate Paul Ryan into the fall campaign, the convention quickly approved a conservative platform that calls for tax cuts ? not government spending ? to stimulate the economy at a time of sluggish growth and 8.3 percent unemployment.

Ann Romney's speech was scripted as a prime-time highlight, an appearance meant to cast her multimillionaire-businessman-turned-politician husband in a soft and likable light before a national TV audience.

Aides said Romney would be in the hall when she spoke.

The former Massachusetts governor was in his hotel suite across the street from the red, white and blue-themed convention hall as delegates affirmed his nomination. Aides said he watched the proceedings on television.

Marring his hope for a seamless convention, the residue of a heated campaign for the nomination was evident inside the hall.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who never won a primary or caucus, drew several dozen delegate votes. Earlier, his supporters chanted and booed after the convention adopted rules they opposed, but were powerless to block, to prevent those votes from being officially registered.

Opinion polls made the race a close one as the Republicans' days of pageantry and speechmaking began in earnest, and the man tapped to deliver the keynote address set the stakes.

"Conventions are always huge for a challenger, because they're the ones introducing themselves" to the voters, said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Convention planners squeezed two days of speeches and other convention business into one after scrapping Monday's scheduled opener because of fears that Isaac would make a direct hit on the Florida Gulf Coast.

That threat fizzled, but it was instantly replaced by another ? that Republicans would wind up holding a political celebration at the same time the storm turned its fury on New Orleans, devastated almost exactly seven years ago by Hurricane Katrina.

Romney's convention planners said they were in frequent contact with weather forecasters, but they declined to discuss what contingency plans, if any, they had to accelerate plans for him to deliver a formal acceptance speech Thursday night.

"This is obviously the biggest speech of my life," Mrs. Romney said as she visited the custom-made podium to prepare for her remarks.

Ratification of a party platform was prelude to Romney's nomination, a document more conservative on abortion than the candidate.

On economic matters, it backs extension of the tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 and due to expire at year's end, without exception. It also calls for an additional 20 percent reduction in income tax brackets that Romney favors.

In a time of 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in the post-World War II era, that went to the crux of the campaign for the White House.

By contrast, Obama wants to allow existing tax cuts to expire on upper income taxpayers, and has criticized Romney's overall economic plans as a boon to millionaires that would raise taxes on the middle class.

The GOP platform also pledges that a Republican-controlled Congress will repeal, and Romney will sign, legislation to repeal the health care legislation Obama won from a Democratic-controlled Congress. So, too, for the measure passed to regulate Wall Street in the wake of the 2008 economic collapse.

On abortion, the platform says, "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

Romney opposes abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or when "the health and life of the mother" are at stake, he said in a convention week interview.

Obama, who accepts renomination at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week, campaigned in Iowa Tuesday as he set out on a tour of college campuses in battleground states in hopes of boosting voter registration among college students.

Before departing the White House, he made a point of appearing before reporters to announce the government's latest steps to help those in the way of Isaac. He signed a declaration of emergency for Mississippi and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local storm response efforts in the state.

His surrogates did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said, "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Female voters, too, prefer the president over his challenger, and Democrats have done their best to emphasize GOP opposition to abortion and even suggest the party might try and curtail access to contraceptives if it wins power.

Whatever the impact of those issues, the polls show the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race, and on that, the voters narrowly say they trust Romney more.

In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama.

However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, and 27 percent said Romney.

The convention took place in an atmosphere of security that was both stringent and selective. Thousands of police from all over the country, joined by National Guard troops, Secret Service and others, stood in small groups at checkpoints, demanding those entering a secure area display proper credentials numerous times.

But former Michigan Gov. John Engler and an aide were hustled to the front of a long line waiting to clear security at one building.

Aside from Paul, Romney's long-ago rivals for the party nomination had bit roles at his convention, if that.

Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain posed for a photo after running into each other at the convention center. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were also in town, as well, both with speaking slots, unlike Bachmann and Cain.

Rodrigo Gimenez Grills Up for Open House at Doug Margerum?s New?Winery

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

When Rodrigo Gimenez was crowned amateur champ of this paper?s Sizzling Summer BBQ Contest in June, the Argentinean architect planned to go back to the drafting board as soon as his work visa came through. That finally happened this month, but instead of designing buildings, Gimenez is sticking to the grill, planning to become a professional chef while putting his architecture career on?hold.

?This is my passion,? said Gimenez, whose first big gig is this Sunday?s open house for the brand-new winery facility of veteran vintner/respected restaurateur Doug Margerum. ?I love to eat and drink and talk with?people.?

Margerum Wine Company, Happy Canyon Vineyard, and Cent?Anni wines. ?Their fruitiness and structure will complement the wide range of flavors Rodrigo is planning to create,? said Margerum, who?s consolidating all of his operations under one roof in one of the warehouses on Industrial Way in Buellton and noted that a few growlers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing next door might also make an?appearance.

Gimenez?s mouth-watering menu includes corn pudding empanadas; veggies grilled in a steel disc; burnt tomato, goat cheese, and anchovy crostinis; chicken milanese with smashed?potatoes;

grilled sirloin caps with variety of chimichurris; blood, chicken, and chorizo sausages; sweetbreads in green sauce; and pork ribs in lemon cream sauce. All of it will be grilled over an open flame in a barbecue that Gimenez is building on-site out of cinder blocks. ?The main idea is to cook with fire,? he explained. ?That?s how we do it in?Argentina.?

Though he?ll always have architecture as a fallback, Gimenez is dreaming of much bigger food ideas for the future. ?It?s an amazing opportunity and possibility to start doing this,? said Gimenez. ?Thanks to the newspaper, this could be my new?job.?

Rodrigo Gimenez heats up the grill for Margerum Wine Company?s open house on Industrial Way in Buellton this Sunday, September 2, 1-4 p.m., with wine, food, and winery tours with barrel tastings for $30. Elder Care in Washington Township, NJ - Home Care Mount Laurel ...

Financial elder abuse occurs when a person uses illegal or deceptive methods to gain control of a senior citizen?s assets. Sometimes the method is straight forward ? stealing money outright or forging the senior?s signature on a check, car title, or deed. Other times, abusers use more subtle methods ? convincing the senior to give them credit card information in order to claim a non-existent prize, for instance, or soliciting donations for a fraudulent charity.

Someone a Senior Knows

The perpetrator of financial elder abuse may be someone the senior knows and loves, such as a child or grandchild. In these cases, the abuser is usually in great need of money ? often to feed an addiction ? and believes that he or she is somehow entitled to the senior?s money and other assets. The family member who abuses may make statements like, ?She didn?t take care of me right when I was a kid, so she owes me something now.?

A Stranger Who Becomes a Friend

Other abusers start out as strangers but quickly work their way into the senior citizen?s life as a friend, a love interest, or even a caregiver. Once they have attained a position that gives them access to the senior?s valuables and bank accounts, the exploitation begins.

Scams via Phone and Mail

Another type of financial abuser perpetrates telephone scams, coaxing seniors into pouring their money into worthless investments or spending thousands of dollars on merchandise that is little more than junk. These abusers tend to prey upon seniors who are slightly confused and don?t always understand the consequences of their financial decisions.

Elder Care Protection

Protecting your loved one from all forms of abuse is important in elder care. Sadly, though, you may not discover that your loved one has been financially abused until his or her assets have vanished. This is especially true if your loved one still handles his or her own finances.

Hire a Reputable Home Care Agency

One option that can help stop financial abuse and promote good elder care is to hire a pre-screened caregiver from a reputable agency that provides in-home services to seniors. The caregiver who visits several times per week is in a perfect position to notice suspicious activity ? increased check-writing to family members or unfamiliar charities, phone calls or visits from new ?friends,? or an increase in the number of deliveries made to the home.

When you hire the caregiver, discuss your concerns about financial abuse with the agency and the caregiver. Make it clear that you want to be informed of any signs the caregiver sees of any type of abuse. Becoming aware of a possible problem early on can allow you to protect your loved one from being financially exploited.

This Man Made $28000 A Month Writing Fake - Business Insider

?

It turns out all those fake-sounding reviews on Amazon.com probably are.?Bing Liu, a data-mining expert?tells the New York Times that about one in three online reviews are fake.

The reason: there's a lot of money in fake reviews, according to an excellent expos? by the New York Times's David Streitfield.

Take the case of Todd Rutherford, for example.

Rutherford used to write press release for authors hoping to get professional reviewers to read their books.

Eventually, Rutherford realized he could cut out the middleman. So he started charging money to write reviews. He would charge $99 for one review, $499 for 20 and $999 for 50. He eventually published?4,531 reviews and at one point pulled in 28,000 per month.?

The business worked because it worked for Rutherford's clients. Authors who get a bunch of reviews on Amazon tend to sell more books than those who don't.

The business eventually cratered when Rutherford Google realized he was selling positive reviews and refused to sell him any more ads. Then Amazon nuked almost all of his reviews.

Rutherford is now selling RVs, offline. But he's angling for a way to get back in the game. His most recent plan is to charge $99 to write tweets about books for his 33,000 Twitter followers.

Turkish cameraman held in Syria appears on TV

Turkish media on Monday relayed the video of a Turkish journalist missing in neighbouring Syria for a week and reportedly being held by troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

The video was broadcast by Syria's al-Ikhbariya news channel and relayed by Turkey's private NTV television where Cuneyt Unal, who speaks in Turkish with Arabic subtitles, says he crossed into Aleppo together with armed groups from Chechnya, Libya, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Unal works for the US-funded al-Hurra network and was in Aleppo together with his colleague Bashar Fahmi, who is also believed to have been captured by loyalist troops.

In the video, Unal appears tired and nervous, with bruises under both eyes.

On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Unal was forced to make a statement and dictated what he was coerced to say.

In the beginning of the video, the Syrian television broadcasts a picture of the Turkish cameraman with a rocket-propelled grenade rifle.

But Davutoglu said Unal was in Syria for purely journalism reasons. "The Syrian state is responsible for his well-being," he added.

The US Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) issued a statement calling for the journalist's release.

"This video is deeply disturbing and underscores the perilous situation for these journalists," said Michael Meehan, a member of the BBG board and chairman of the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (MBN), which operates al-Hurra.

There was no word on the fate of Fahmi.

"They entered Syria only to report the news. We call for their immediate release, and we urge the Syrian government to take action to ensure their safety," Meehan added.

Kristin Chenoweth to co-host "Anderson Live" premiere

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Kristin Chenoweth will serve as the first co-host when Anderson Cooper's revamped daytime talk show returns September 10 for a second season, the show said Monday.

Chenoweth, who recently had to put a guest-starring run on CBS's "The Good Wife" on hold due to injuries she sustained while filming the political drama, will be followed by guest co-hosts including Goldie Hawn, Kelly Osbourne, Cyndi Lauper, Howie Mandel, Erin Andrews, D.L. Hughley and Kellie Pickler.

Co-hosts are something new for Cooper's talk show, which is undergoing a number of changes from its first season. The show also gets a name change to "Anderson Live," from the previous "Anderson," and it will tape in front of a live audience in a new venue, moving from Lincoln Center to the CBS Broadcast Center in New York.

Celebrity guests for the upcoming season include Richard Gere, Beyonc?, Jake Gyllenhaal, Claire Danes, Meg Ryan, Ben Affleck, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Kerry Washington, Kelsey Grammer, Carol Burnett and Stephen Colbert.

"We've got a lot of fun, great things planned for the new season," Cooper said of the changes. "I am really excited to be joined by daily co-hosts and look forward to switching to a live format, which allows us more freedom to cover topical issues as well as connect more with the viewer at home."

Playing India will be a tough challenge: William Bosisto ? Cricket News Update

Australia Under-19s skipper William Bosisto has stated that his team anticipates a tough challenge as they gear up to clash with the India Under-19s in their upcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup final, scheduled for August 26 at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville.

?India has strong top-order batting, and the five bowlers it has are really consistent. It will be a tough challenge for us,? Bosisto observed. ?India has been much like us in a way as it has managed to get over the line without perhaps playing its best cricket.?

The Australia U-19s, defending champions of the World U-19 title, are as yet unbeaten in the competition, despite the fact that neither they, not fellow finalists India, feature in the top 5 on the tournament?s list of most runs scored or most wickets taken.

Australia?s highest wicket-taker Ashton Turner (10 scalps) is at number 14 on the list of most wickets taken, while India?s Ravikant Singh is at number 6 with 11 scalps. Cameron Bancroft (194 runs) is at 17th place on the list of the tournament?s highest run getters, while India?s Prashant Chopra (172) is at number 23.

However, Australia have managed to defeat the England, Nepal, and Ireland U-19s during the Group A matches, before going on to win both the 1st quarter-final against Bangladesh by 5 wickets, and the 1st semi-final against South Africa by 4 wickets.

The team will be looking to carry the same momentum into the final on Sunday, and continue their winning streak. The Aussies are the most successful U-19 team, having won the title thrice before ? in 1988, 2002, and 2010. A 2012 win could enable them to win back-to-back titles, a feat which has only been achieved by the Pakistan U-19 team in the history of the tournament (2004, 2006).

Commenting on the fact that his team lost to the India U-19s when they met for a Quadrangular Under-19 Series in Australia earlier this year during April, Bosisto brushed the series aside, claiming the current conditions and line-up are different for both teams this time around.

?We have played India a fair bit over the past year or so, but I don't think we can read too much into past results,? he said. ?The conditions are probably a little bit different than they were in April and we have a few changes to our side as have they.?

Chasing Some Blue Sky: BLT Pasta

I've had this recipe hanging on my fridge for ages. ?Yes, tons of cookbooks, Pinterest pins, and Cooking Light and Food Network Magazine subscriptions and I still rip out random recipes and stick them to the fridge. ?Go figure.?

This BLT pasta has all of the yummy flavors of BLT minus the mayo which just happens to be my least favorite part anyway. ?If you love mayo, I'd say this pasta is so flavorful, you might not even miss it. ? If you really wanted to add mayo to the cold version of this salad, you'd probably have pasta salad.

The recipe itself is hardly complicated....boil pasta and chop veggies...but the end product is full of chewy pasta and bacon goodness. ?Yep, there's tomatoes and spinach but really it's about the bacon right?

You start off with making some garlic breadcrumbs which is a perfect way to use up the last of that baguette you couldn't resist at the market. ? Process until you have fine crumbs.

Heat oil and garlic in pan and then add breadcrumbs and toast.?

?Set aside and grab your other ingredients. Love the substitution of spinach for lettuce.?

I'd show you a photo of the bacon cooking but really, this is a more telling photo of what happens when bacon is cooking in this house. ?Puppies need bacon.

Deglaze the pan with white wine before adding tomato paste, vinegar, stock and ?a bit of red peppers. ?I added quite a bit.

Turn off heat and toss in spinach and tomatoes and toss. ?Pretend I mentioned earlier in the post that you should start your water and boil your pasta.?

Add the cooked pasta and crumbled bacon. ?Toss and serve. ?I threw some breadcrumbs in at this point but really they are best tossed on top of each individual dish of pasta.?

BLT Pasta

adapted from torn out newspaper recipe

Ingredients
1 clove garlic
1 cup french baguette cut into bread cubes
1 teaspoon olive oil
6 strips thick-sliced bacon
1 1/2 c diced tomatoes

2 c fresh spinach leaves
1/4 cup dry white wine

1 tsp red wine vinegar
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 tbsp tomato paste
spaghetti, linguine or any pasta really--cooked al dente

salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook bucatini according to package instructions.
  2. Mince garlic in a food processor. Add bread cubes, and process until you have crumbs.?
  3. Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium; add crumbs and toast until golden, 3 to 4 minutes, stirring often. Season with salt and set aside.
  4. Saute bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook until crisp, then transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon bacon grease.
  5. Deglaze skillet with wine; simmer until liquid is nearly evaporated. Add the broth, vinegar, tomato paste and red pepper flakes. Simmer until liquid is reduced by a third, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add spinach, tomatoes and toss.
  7. Transfer cooked pasta from cooking water to the skillet using tongs. Add crumbled bacon and toss to coat with sauce. Season with salt.?
  8. Sprinkle with bread crumbs prior to serving.

Tech Tips for Entrepreneurs: How to Stay Productive and Let ...

August 25, 2012

Page 1 Page 2

When you?re running a business, you and your team are often faced with the task of complete several projects simultaneously. This leads to increased multitasking in the workplace.

In general, there is an ongoing debate about the quality of work completed while multitasking. Women are often both praised and ridiculed for their ability to multitask. While it is not specifically a female trait, it does seem to be less common in men.

But one thing is clear.

Some tasks can be combined to improve efficiency.

Tech Inspired Productivity

In today?s technology driven world, our electronic devices multitask for us. Most smartphones come fully equipped with a calculator, calendar, and apps for any occasion. We can perform most business functions on a computer, which streamlines processes. What?s more, when technology multitasks for us, the quality of deliverables and productivity is not lost.

Here are four effective, tech-inspired ways to combine tasks to maximize productivity and efficiency.

1. Organization: Keep everything in one place.

You can lose a lot of time in a business just by looking for things.

Being organized will save you time. And interestingly enough, I?ve heard that if time could be measured in weight, you could save 2,000 lbs of time just by being organized. Isn?t that a load off your shoulders?

There are many ways to become organized. First, make sure all of the software you need to do business is on your computer or easily accessible in the cloud. Also ensure that all company computers have network access. Everything is now in one location, but can be accessed from any work computer. Once your team develops a habit of saving files to the network, they will be much easier to locate.

2. Find a software that does everything you need.

Today, small businesses can operate like multinational companies. This starts with improved access to enterprise level software that meets the unique needs of a small business.

There are numerous databases and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems that will keep track of various functions within your company: Accounts Payable, Sales Orders, Payroll, and Project Management. You can store all of that information in one easily searchable database. Also, open source ERP solutions on the market are scalable and effective for almost any business.

Customization is the key to efficiency. Tailor your office management solutions to your office.

Judge Upholds Eminent Domain For Pipeline In Texas

Posted on Aug. 24, 2012 From NY Times

The Canadian energy company TransCanada can take over land owned by a Texas farmer to build its Keystone XL pipeline, a county judge ruled on Wednesday night. In a 15-word ruling sent from his iPhone, Judge Bill Harris of Lamar County Court at Law upheld TransCanada?s condemnation of a 50-foot strip of land across Julia Trigg Crawford?s pasture here. The pipeline is being built to carry oil to Texas refineries from Canada.

Ms. Crawford plans to appeal the ruling. ?We may have lost this one battle here in Paris, Texas, but we are far from done,? she said in a statement. ?I will continue to proudly stand up for my own personal rights, the property rights of my family, and those of other Texans fighting to protect their land.?
