The Great Outdoors And Your Fitness Plan | ? How To Diet ? ( FREE ...

Anyone can lead a healthy lifestyle; it doesn?t take a rocket scientist. Keep reading to find some tips to help with food decisions. You will learn there are a lot of easy things you can do in order to get the proper nutrition.

Make sure to eat the right levels of fats, proteins and carbohydrates in your diet. Proteins should comprise about 30% of your diet, while fats and carbs should take up about 20% and 50% of your diet, respectively. Focus on carbs that are not sugar.

Proper nutrition is vital to your good health and fitness. By eating a well-balanced diet, you can feel good and look good as well. One of the healthiest choices you can make for yourself is lowering your consumption of refined sugar. Make sure you read the labels on bottled drinks. These items usually have a ton of sugar in them, which should be avoided. You?ll notice a difference if you cut sugar from your diet. You?ll also feel and look better.

By simply reducing the quantity of food in your meal by twenty-five percent, you can reduce your total daily caloric intake by a quarter. This makes it easier to reduce portions and shed excess weight.

It?s well known that being accountable to a friend can improve your nutrition and exercise compliance. Regardless of whether you are trying to diet or exercise better, you should have a friend that can motivate and push you. This makes hitting your goals much easier.

Use egg whites and avoid the yolk when making breakfast. The egg yolk contains a large amount of cholesterol, so using egg whites only is healthier for you. Substitute the whites of two eggs for each whole egg called for in your breakfast dishes.

A good breakfast should be part of any diet that aims to provide your body with adequate nutrition. Breakfast is a great way to kick-start your metabolism.

Try to keep lots of records of all of your different types of progress. If your blood pressure was high keep a diary of that as well. And if you were overweight, keep a log of pounds and inches have lost by practicing better nutrition.

You should consider trying a juicer so you get all of the veggies, fruits, vitamins and minerals that your body requires each day. Adding vegetables to your juice gives it an extra kick. Adding a bit of ginger to some of your blends, particularly carrot apple, will give them a zip. Half of a jalapeno can also be used to spice up your drinks.

In order for diet and exercise to work, you must be motivated, and you must make time. These basic components of a fitness regime are crucial for success. If you are motivated, you will stick with your program and find time for exercising. Setting a specific daily time to exercise is also a good idea. Try to find an exercise that fits you and one that you like.

When you begin using the above tips in your daily life, you?ll find it easier to make nutritious choices without having to think much about it. Once you get the basics, it gets easier to incorporate good nutrition into your daily life. Good health to you!

The urgent need for universally applicable simple screening ...

| By Global Health Action

Background: To address the risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes and future type 2 diabetes associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), its early detection and timely treatment is essential. In the absence of an international consensus, multiple different guidelines on screening and diagnosis of GDM have existed for a long time. This may be changing with the publication of the recommendations by the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups. However, none of these guidelines take into account evidence from or ground realities of resource-poor settings.

Hulu Plus app live on Apple TV

We haven't seen any official information yet, but tipsters report and we've confirmed on our own that Hulu Plus is quietly rolling out to Apple TV set-top boxes this morning. It was on our hockey pucks when we turned them on, while reports on Twitter indicate losing the connection before the icon appeared once the box came back online. We're checking it out now, and like Netflix, it allows users to pay for the service via iTunes if they choose. The menus and UI are all appropriately Apple TV styled, if you're not seeing it yet on your box then it should probably be there after a reboot. Otherwise it's the same old Hulu Plus, just (finally) on Apple TV without any hacks or redirects needed, any new users can snag a 1 week free trial by signing up on the website or through the device itself.

Update: We have official confirmation now, check the Hulu Blog for more information, or after the break for two quick demo videos.

[Thanks, Rune]

Mayor Bloomberg Declares War On Baby Formula

Latch On NYC Breastfeeding Campaign (credit: NYC Health Dept.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has banned smoking in New York City parks and is trying to ban the sale of sugary drinks over 16 oz. But he already has his sights on his next target: baby formula.

WCBS 880?s Alex Silverman On The Story

Latch On NYC is a citywide initiative to support mothers who choose to breastfeed and limit practices that interfere with that choice.

It begins September 3, but ads are already on the subways.

The mayor said Monday that all the big public health people agree with him.

He said they say it?s a great idea because breast milk is just better.

?The immunities that a mother has built up get passed on to the child,? he told reporters.

Hospitals choosing to be part of the city program will keep formula bottles hidden and carefully controlled to encourage breastfeeding.

?We?re not making anybody do it. We?re suggesting, and the same thing with full sugar drinks,? the mayor said. ?I was behind a truck this morning, and they said ?Don?t limit our drinks.? Nobody?s limiting. It?s just the size of the cup.?

Mothers will still be allowed to have formula, but will have to request it, won?t get it for free, and hospital staff will have to sign it out.

The National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy has come out in support of the mayor?s plan, and hopes to get more hospitals on board.

From smoking to soda to baby formula? one reporter wanted to know what?s next.

?Anything that we can think of that will improve your health,? he said.

Where do you stand on the mayor?s initiative? Sound off in the comments section below.

IPhone appeal dims as Samsung shines

NEW YORK (AP) ? The latest iPhone looks much the same as the first iPhone, which came out more than five years ago. That hasn't been a problem for Apple ? until, now.

The pace of iPhone sales has slowed, Apple revealed last week. Part of the problem is that the competition has found a formula that works: thinner phones with big screens that make the iPhone look small and chubby.

For a dose of smartphone envy, iPhone owners need to look no further than Samsung Electronics Co., the number-one maker of smartphones in the world. Its newest flagship phone, the Galaxy S III, is sleek and wafer-thin.

By comparison, the iPhone "is getting a bit long in the tooth," says Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC.

Apple has become the world's most valuable company on the back of the iPhone, which makes up nearly half of its revenue. IPhone sales are still growing, but the question of how fast they're growing is of keen interest to investors. The iPhone certainly has room to grow: only one in six smartphones sold globally in the second quarter had an Apple logo on its back.

When Apple reported financial results for its latest quarter last week, a new phenomenon was revealed: Buyers started pulling back on iPhone purchases just six months after the launch of the latest iPhone model.

Apple executives blamed the tepid sales on "rumors and speculation" that may have caused some consumers to wait for the next iPhone, which is due in the fall. But in the past, iPhone sales have stayed strong nine months after the new model is launched, then dipped as people began holding off, waiting for the new model.

In the April to June period, Apple sold 26 million phones, 28 percent more than it did in the same quarter last year.

Most other phone makers "would kill" for those numbers, says Stephen Baker, an analyst with research firm NPD Group.

The exception is Samsung, which has solidified its position at the world's largest maker of smartphones. Analysts believe it made just over 50 million smartphones in the second quarter, or nearly twice as many as Apple. (The company doesn't release specific figures.) Its smartphone sales have nearly tripled in a year.

Most of Samsung's sales comprise cheaper smartphones that don't compete directly with the iPhone. Its flagship phones, though, have emerged as the iPhone's chief rivals.

Samsung and Apple have a complicated relationship. They're rivals in the smartphone and tablet-computer markets, and are set to square off in a high-profile trial over mobile patents in San Francisco this week. Samsung is one of Apple's largest suppliers of chips and displays, and Apple is one of Samsung's largest clients.

Though Apple is known as a relentless innovator, the iPhone's screen has been the same size ? 3.5 inches on the diagonal ? since the first iPhone came out. It was a big screen for the time, but among the competition, screen sizes have crept up.

Samsung has increased the screen size of its Galaxy series with every model since it debuted in 2010. The Galaxy S had a screen that measured 4 inches diagonally, and was followed by the S II, at 4.3 inches. The S III, the latest model, measures 4.8 inches. The screen is nearly twice as large as the iPhone's. Yet the Galaxy is thinner and lighter than an iPhone.

Samsung has also achieved surprising success with an even bigger phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note. Its 5.3-inch screen makes it somewhat awkward to hold to the ear, but customers don't seem to mind, or perhaps they value the large screen and included stylus more.

Aside from design, Apple is inflexible in another way: by releasing a new phone only one per year, it lets the competition create new phones with features the iPhone doesn't have and lets them go unchallenged, at least until the new iPhone comes out.

"Apple's schedule leaves the other ten or nine months of the year wide open for everybody else," says Llamas.

For instance, the newest Samsung phones can use the latest high-speed data networks in the U.S., and talk to payment terminals in stores, so they can act as smart "credit cards."

Samsung times its product launches to take maximum advantage of the lull in iPhone sales that usually precedes the launch of a new model. The S III went on sale in Europe in May and in the U.S. in June.

The rest of the competition is in disarray, and hasn't been able to capitalize in the same way on Apple's rigid release schedule and conservative design. Nokia Corp., until recently the world's largest phone maker, is in sharp retreat and is conducting a complete revamp of its smartphones. Research In Motion Ltd. is stuck with outdated software for its BlackBerrys at least until it launches a new operating system next year. HTC Corp. of Taiwan is suffering from marketing missteps in the last few years. LG Electronics, another Korean company, hasn't been able to keep up with Samsung when it comes to high-end phones, or with cheaper manufacturers on the low end.

Together, Samsung and Apple make half of the world's smartphones, and since competitors are losing money or breaking even, account for nearly all of the profits in the industry.

"Samsung is the only company that didn't really buckle under the weight of the iPhone 4S. Good, solid devices and good, solid marketing behind them," Llamas says.

Analysts now expect the new iPhone to arrive in September or October, probably with a slightly bigger screen. Sticking to one screen size has served Apple well, Baker says, but he sees the company moving with the times, as it's done many times before.

"When they have the reputation and the brand loyalty that they have, you don't have to be the first to market" with new features, Baker says. "You don't have to take that risk."

Kidney cancer vaccine successful in clinical trials

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of T?bingen and immatics biotechnologies GmbH -- a start-up by T?bingen scientists -- have published the results of two clinical studies using the kidney-cancer vaccine IMA901 in the latest edition of Nature Medicine.

IMA901 is used to treat patients with cancer of the kidneys. It is composed of ten synthetic tumor-associated peptides (TUMAPs), which activate the body's own killer T-cells against the tumor. Unlike chemotherapy, this process targets the body's immune responses and mobilizes them to attack the cancer. The studies show that this active immunization against cancer can be successful and extend the life of a patient for longer than even the latest chemotherapy techniques -- with far fewer side-effects.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Rammensee, head of Immunology at the University of T?bingen and co-founder of immatics biotechnologies, says: "This work is a milestone in the development of cancer immune therapies. The principle applied here -- of active immunization against cancer antigens previously identified in cancer cells -- can be used against practically all types of cancer. University of T?bingen researchers have published similarly successful clinical studies in the case of bowel cancer, also in collaboration with immatics, and prostate cancer. Immatics is currently carrying out studies on treatments for glioblastoma [a common and malignant brain tumor] and further studies for treating liver cancer and ovarian carcinoma are in the pipeline."

Prof. Dr. Arnulf Stenzl, head of Urology at the University Hospitals, who supervised the clinical studies, explains: "All of the medications previously used have brought about a clear improvement in reducing tumor growth in cancer of the kidneys, but they did not lead to the desired extension of the patient's life and certainly did not cure the patient. So from the clinical point of view, the further development by immatics of active immunization in combination with a low dose of one-off chemotherapy is a significant step in the treatment of kidney cell carcinoma -- and possibly other malignant tumors as well."

One particular aspect of this kidney cancer study is its uniquely exhaustive analysis of the immune response against the cancer antigens -- done with the help of biomarkers. In particular, the characteristics of the white blood cells involved were precisely detailed during the course of the immunization. Complex logistics were required to get these cells frozen and transported to T?bingen from study centers all over Europe, while ensuring they were in a fit state to be analyzed.

The study shows that in kidney-cancer patients with documented T-cell reactions against two or more tumor-associated peptides, the immune reaction and clinical progress were clearly linked. That confirms the hypothesis that cancer treatments can be further developed by broadly activating the immune system against various target structures on the surface of the tumor. The article also describes the researchers' aims of identifying biomarkers which could help give a more accurate prediction of how long certain groups of patients may live after being treated with IMA901. An analysis of more than 300 potential biomarkers turned up a number of them which are currently being tested in a new phase-3 study by immatics for their ability to show an immune response and the extension of patient life after treatment with IMA901.

U.S. economic growth slowed to 1.5 pct. rate in Q2

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back sharply on spending. The slowdown in growth adds to worries that the economy could be stalling three years after the recession ended.

The Commerce Department also said Friday that the economy grew a little better than previously thought in the January-March quarter. It raised its estimate to a 2 percent rate, up from 1.9 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent isn't enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.2 percent last month. And most economists don't expect growth to pick up much in the second half of the year. Europe's financial crisis and a looming budget crisis in the U.S. are expected to slow business investment further.

"The main take away from today's report, the specifics aside, is that the U.S. economy is barely growing," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC. "Along with a reduction in the actual amount of money companies were able to make, it's no wonder the unemployment rate cannot move lower."

Stock futures rose slightly after the report was released. Some economists had thought the growth estimate would be even lower.

The lackluster economy is raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said that the sluggish second quarter growth rate is probably not weak enough to trigger more action by the Federal Reserve when it meets next week.

Many economists, however, believe the Fed will launch another round of bond buying at its September policy meeting. The aim is to drive long-term interest rates lower and encourage more borrowing and spending.

The 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter was the weakest since the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, expanded at a 1.3 percent rate in the July-September quarter last year. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of a cup of coffee to the sale of fighter jets.

Current-dollar GDP increased at an annual rate of $117.6 billion in the second quarter to $15.6 trillion.

Growth was weaker mostly because consumer spending slowed to a growth rate of just 1.5 percent. That's down from 2.4 percent in the first quarter. Americans bought fewer autos, computers and other long-lasting manufactured goods. Spending on services increased.

They also saved more. The savings rate increased to 4 percent, up from 3.6 percent in the first quarter.

Consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, was offset somewhat by a slightly smaller drag from the government. Spending by governments fell at an annual rate of 1.4 percent in the second quarter, just half of the 3 percent rate of decline in the first quarter.

The Commerce Department also revised its growth estimates for the past three years. Those revisions showed that the economy contracted 3.1 percent in 2009, slightly less than the 3.5 percent previously reported. Growth in 2010 was put at 2.4 percent, down from 3 percent, with growth in 2011 at 1.8 percent instead of 1.7 percent.

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter.? Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitate?to plant drugs in your locker and call the police.? Heh.? Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career today?at 4:00 p.m. (PST).? If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh.? The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has truly?retired or if he'll get in the cage once more.? Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home?? No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him."? Stay tuned!

?

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfight?next.? Who would you rather fight?? A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, or?UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reach?and has?murdered everyone put in front of him?? Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad.? Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner.? He was subsequently booted from the card.? But it's?a new day, and with this new day comes the?news (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie)?that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.? Hooray!? If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous and?beating people silly?is good for main events.

?

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix.? Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website.? Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting.? There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now.? Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

Re: {UAH} L_Cpl Otto: Asbestos | Health

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that has been a popular building material since the 1950s. It is used as?an insulator?[this relates to clod climates to keep in heat and keep out cold], has good fire protection properties and?protects against corrosion?[the reason it was preferred to Mabati (iron sheets) which corrode faster than asbestos corrugated sheets].

Because asbestos is often mixed with another material, it's hard to know if you're working with it or not. But, if you work in a building [in Europe and Americas] built before the year 2000, it's likely that some parts of the building will contain asbestos. For Uganda think of the housing estates, schools, hospitals, dispensaries, offices built since 1960 to date that have used asbestos?corrugated?sheets for roofing. Many Ugandans used asbestos for their garage roofs.?

Asbestos is found in many products used in buildings, including ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers and sprayed coatings.

The asbestos commonly found in Uganda is via corrugated asbestos roofing. The greatest danger lies with collecting rain water from those corrugated asbestos roofs. The?phenomena?of?insulation?is mainly ?a cold climate issue.

Common uses

Sprayed coating

Found as fire protection on structural supports (eg columns and beams).?It is a high hazard asbestos product and can generate very high fibre levels if disturbed.

Pipe Insulation

Asbestos thermal pipe lagging is a high hazard asbestos product.

Floor tiles

Vinyl (PVC) or thermoplastic tiles often contain asbestos.

Asbestos cement roof sheeting

Asbestos cement sheeting is often found on industrial building roofs and walls.

Textured decorative coating (such as Artex)

Textured coatings contain a small amount of asbestos. The asbestos is well bonded and fibres are not easily released. However, it is still an asbestos product, and as such, needs to be worked with safely.

Asbestos is a hidden killer that can cause four serious diseases (described below). These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything. There is a need for you to protect yourself now.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a cancer which affects the lining of the lungs (pleura) and the lining surrounding the lower digestive tract (peritoneum). It is almost exclusively related to asbestos exposure and by the time it is diagnosed, it is almost always fatal.

Asbestos-related lung cancer

Asbestos-related lung cancer
Asbestos-related lung cancer is the same as (looks the same as) lung cancer caused by smoking and other causes. It is estimated that there is around one lung cancer for every mesothelioma death.

Asbestosis

Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a serious scarring condition of the lung that normally occurs after heavy exposure to asbestos over many years. This condition can cause progressive shortness of breath, and in severe cases can be fatal.

Pleural thickening

Pleural thickening?
Pleural thickening is generally a problem that happens after heavy asbestos exposure. The lining of the lung (pleura) thickens and swells. If this gets worse, the lung itself can be squeezed, and can cause shortness of breath and discomfort in the chest.

The case for our experts is to provide us with stats covering the recent past of the people who have died from the above four causes. Although asbestos as we know it in Uganda does not corrode easily nevertheless the minimal quantities consumed over time could threaten life.

The responsibility lies with Government to provide public information on asbestos. It does not matter now whether the advice on developments that used asbestos were uninformed, incompetent, well intended, etc the public must be told and the Building Regulations and guidelines must be amended to include clauses on asbestos.

Your Child and Skin Cancer- What You Should Know ...

Dr. Asarch was recently quoted in an article for SHE KNOWS?titled ?Checking Your Child for Skin Cancer?. Here are some of the notable quotes?

How can you help prevent your child from getting skin cancer?

??Sunscreen ? especially on vacations,? says Dr. Woolery-Lloyd. ?One study showed that children who went on sunny vacations had a greater number of atypical moles.?

And what about newborns and infants? ?Avoiding the sun when the baby is born is a start and you can start applying sunscreen after the age of 6 months. However the best prevention for all children is to stay in the shade. Since most skin cancers are a result of cumulative sun damage, the less exposure to sun damage and burns, the better the long-term preventive value.? says Dr. Hellman.

Dr. Richard Asarch, a board certified Denver dermatologist, also reminds parents that sunscreen needs to be applied daily and?not just on sunny days. ?Even on a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun?s UV rays can pass through the clouds. Apply an SPF of at least 30 15-20 minutes before sun exposure to allow a protective film to develop.? Asarch continues, ?Re-apply every two hours or after excessive sweating or swimming. Use enough sunscreen to generously coat all exposed skin.??

?Be aware of the myths

If you still believe your child may not be at risk for developing skin cancer, Dr. Asarch urges you to consider these myths:

  • Tanning or getting a base tan helps prevents skin cancers?? False.
  • There is little risk of sunburning on cloudy days?? False.
  • The sun is more intense at the hot summer beach than in the cool mountain elevations?? False. Check the UV index for the area you live in to determine the risk.
  • My child is not at risk because he has dark skin?? False. While it is true that skin cancer is less likely in darker pigmented skin, it is not risk free. Sun protection is essential for all skin types, tones and pigmentations.

Read the full article on SHE KNOWS?HERE.

*?Tell your friends about Dr. Asarch on Facebook or Pinterest!

**Read Dr. Asarch?s original article on Skin Cancer and Children below.

The development of skin cancer in children is not common as basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma development is related to a cumulative exposure to ultraviolet light. Children, in general, do not accumulate enough UV exposure to create these tumors until later in life.

However, sun exposure can be more dangerous for children than adults. As we age, our skin develops a protective melanin pigment to help prevent sun burns. In infants and young children, this pigment is under-developed leading to a higher risk of sun burns and damage. Protection from UV exposure is essential for all children, but particularly important for those with very fair skin, moles -or whose parents have a tendency to develop moles- and a family history of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Skin type can also be indicative of a child?s risk for developing skin cancer. If your child has many freckles, moles or very fair skin, he or she is more at risk of developing skin cancer. Frequent exposure also plays a role. For example, a child who lives at a high altitude and sunny climate may develop skin cancer quicker than a child who lives at a lower altitude. A sunny climate usually means a child will be outdoors more frequently year round and the intensity of the sun?s rays is increased at a higher altitude. Checking your cities UV index will help you determine how risky sun exposure is. Of course, protection from UV exposure with a broad-spectrum sunscreen or block of at least 30 SPF on all exposed skin year-round is recommended.

The first indication of skin cancer in children would be a change in the shape, size or color of a skin growth, including moles and birthmarks. An annual skin check with your Dermatologist will help track these skin growths for changes. More frequent home checks are the easiest method of noticing new or changing growths.

Use the ?ABCDE rule,? which stands for asymmetry, border, color, diameter and evolution, as a guideline for spotting dangerous skin changes. Has there been change in a mole or birthmark where one half of the blemish does not match the other half (asymmetry)? Has the border of the blemish become blurred or ragged (border)? Is there a change or spread of color (color)? Has the blemish grown in size or evolved in any other way (diameter, evolution)?

Most moles do not pose a threat, however some have the potential to become cancerous. If you notice visible changes or your child complains of itching, burning or tenderness to the touch in any skin blemish, see your Dermatologist as soon as possible.

It is not recommended to use sunscreens before 6 months of age, making it essential to keep infants out of the sun whenever possible.? If your infant must be in the sun, dress them in clothing that covers the body, including hats with wide brims and seek shade.

After 6 months of age use a broad-spectrum sunblockthat offers a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. If your child is prone to skin

irritation or allergic reactions, select a physical sunblock or chemical-free sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

?Sun Protection Facts:

  • ?Repeated exposure to UVA and UVB rays causes damage to the cells of the epidermis resulting in the production of wrinkles, age spots and actual skin cancers.
  • Cumulative sun damage can lead to basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Physical Sun blocks (Zinc Oxide &Titanium Dioxide) provide broad spectrum protection blocking both UVA and UVB rays and are gentle enough for daily use.
  • Chemical Sunscreens are combinations of many active ingredients with no single chemical ingredient blocking the entire UV spectrum (unlike physical sun blocks)
  • Sunblocks are only effective if you use them appropriately every day.
  • Even on a cloudy day, up to 80% of the sun?s UV rays can pass through the clouds.
  • Apply SPF 15-20 minutes before sun exposure to allow a protective film to develop.
  • Re-apply every 2 hours or after excessive sweating or swimming
  • Use enough sunscreen to generously coat all exposed skin.
  • Try to avoid sun exposure between10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the strongest sun of the day.
  • Seek shade when your shadow is shorter than you are.
  • Snow and Sand can increase the need for sunscreen due to their reflective properties.
  • Protect your skin by wearing long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses whenever possible.
  • Check your cities UV index to determine your risk.

?

Sun Protection Myths:

  • Tanning or getting a base tan helps prevents skin cancers?? False.
  • There is little risk of sunburning on cloudy days?? False.
  • The sun is more intense at the hot summer beach than in the cool mountain elevations?? False. Check the UV index for the area you live in to determine the risk.

FAQ: How Do Personal Injury Lawyers Charge For Their Services ...

Most personal injury law firms work on a contingent fee basis, which means that they charge a percentage of the recovery, typically between 25 and 40 percent, but only if you win your case or get your case settled.? If there is no recovery, you owe the law firm nothing, which makes it possible for anyone, regardless of their financial status, to hire a skilled attorney to represent them in an injury claim.? This helps to level the playing field in places like West Virginia where it is difficult for the average person to pursue an insurance company or other corporation.

Sprint's iPhone gamble isn't paying off as 2012 Q2 figures reveal $629 million operating loss

Sprints iPhone gamble isnt paying off as 2012 Q2 figures reveal $14 billion loss

Sprint's second quarter figures have arrived, showing that the company's billion-dollar gamble on the iPhone isn't working right now. While it sold 1.5 million Apple-branded handsets in the three month period (40 percent to new and postpaid customers), it recorded an operating loss of $629 million and a colossal net loss of $1.4 billion -- compared to an operating loss of $255 million and a net loss of $863 million in the first quarter. Operating revenues of $8.8 billion improved on those in the first quarter by a single percent -- mostly due to higher service fees from its wireless offerings. It's also grown its cash reserves, up from $128 million last quarter to $267 million today, and can point to 442,000 postpaid and 141,000 new prepaid subscribers pushing the company's customer base up to 56 million nationwide -- mentioning that 60 percent of former Nextel users chose to remain with Sprint during the enforced change.

The figures reveal that Sprint's eating around $782 million due to the shutdown of the Nextel platform and a further $184 million to end leases on antenna sites for the moribund network. It's also having to take a hit of $204 million due to its investment into infrastructure partner Clearwire. It's affirmed its $1 billion lending facility, contingent upon purchasing gear from Ericsson to help build its LTE network, which it aims to have installed in 12,000 sites by the end of the year. Of course, that purchase was prompted by the collapse of Philip Falcone's doomed LightSquared project, which caused Big Yellow to lose $66 million in cash and its childhood innocence when it comes to trusting other people.

Update: Dan Hesse has added that his company has taken all 9,600 IDEN sites off air, well ahead of its planned deadline. Big Yellow also mentioned that have no plans to adopt a shared data plan to follow AT&T and Verizon.

Droid X360 PS Vita clone goes for the KIRF prize, antagonizes Microsoft, Motorola and Sony at the same time

Can we establish a KIRF award for Most Likely to Invite Multiple Lawsuits? If so, Long Xun Software would have to claim the statuette for its Droid X360, at least if it dared set foot in the US. This prime example of keepin' it real fake is even more of a PS Vita clone than the Yinlips YDPG18, but goes the extra mile with a name that's likely to irk Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon and George Lucas all at once. That's even discounting the preloaded emulators for just about every pre-1999 Nintendo, Sega and Sony console. Inside, you'll at least find a device that's reasonably up to snuff: the 5-inch handheld is running Android 4.0 on a 1.5GHz single-core Quanzhi A10 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in space, a 2-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA shooter at the front. If the almost gleeful amount of copyright and trademark violation isn't keeping you from wanting this award-winner, you'll have to ask Long Xun for pricing and availability.

Allegheny Technologies 2Q profit falls 12 percent

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Allegheny Technologies Inc. said Wednesday that second-quarter earnings fell 12 percent as the sluggish economy sapped demand for its specialty metals.

Profit and sales fell short of analysts' forecasts, and the company predicted that 2012 sales would also be below expectations.

Allegheny, which sells metals to companies in the aerospace, defense, energy and other industries, said it was hurt by slow growth in the U.S. and China and the ongoing financial crisis in Europe.

The company said it expects sales and earnings "to trough in the third quarter" because of the economy and seasonal slowdowns at suppliers.

Allegheny thinks 2012 sales will range between $5.3 billion and $5.4 billion. Analysts expect $5.57 billion.

In the second quarter, net income fell to $56.4 million, or 50 cents per share, from year-ago earnings of $64 million, or 59 cents per share.

Revenue rose slightly to $1.36 billion from $1.35 billion.

Analysts forecast 54 cents per share and $1.38 billion, according to FactSet.

Allegheny shares fell 67 cents, or 2.3 percent, to close at $27.97.

Say Goodbye to Our Future: An Emotional Response to Censorship ...

Working on a promotional piece for the upcoming Banned Book Week, I have been assigned the task of promoting a campaign to get people to read books that have been banned or challenged by communities and governments.

fREADom

In my research phase, I?ve come across numerous reasons for certain books being banned. And I am infuriated.

Censorship As ?Protection?

I?m all for community standards and protecting our future generations, but this idea of ?protection? through blatant censorship has become absurd. Some of these reasons I can comprehend, others I never will:

  • J.D. Salinger?s classic The Catcher in the Rye made the list because of its use of ?profanity throughout along with the portrayal of events like prostitution, depression, and alienation.?**
  • George Orwell?s Animal Farm has been banned for its ?pro-communist sentiment and sexuality.?*
  • Brave New World depicts using drugs and sex to dull the pain of a dystopian society.*
  • Guliver?s Travels by Jonathan Swift has been banned for its themes of ?political corruption, anti-war sentiments, and the injustices of colonization.?*
  • George Orwell?s dystopian classic, 1984, has been banned as being ?pro-communist? in its ideas of goverment.*
  • William Golding?s Lord of the Flies has been banned because ?the exploration of human nature can force readers to examine themselves in ways that may not feel comfortable.? *
  • Roald Dahl?s James and the Giant Peach has been challenged due to ?violence, language, and disobedience towards adults? from a young protagonist who ?lives under the oppression of mean caretakers and relies on his creativity and an alternate world in order to survive.?*
  • J.K. Rowling?s Harry Potter series has been banned because parents ?fear that fantasy and reality could become confused for children.?**
  • Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl has been challenged for being ?too depressing?!*
  • Even the environmentally conscious The Lorax by Dr. Seuss has been challenged because ?it shows an unfair portrayal of those in the logging industry.?*

?Think of the Children?

helen_lovejoy

I am thinking of our children! I am concerned for our future generations. Censorship stops the flow of ideas. It stops independent and creative thought. Under the guise of ?protection? it extinguishes the flame of our personal and social evolution.

1984 isn?t about the communist manifesto, it is about not settling for social norms and embracing our independence and our freedom to choose.

Brave New World is a cautionary tale of how deadened we wish to become when we relinquish our independence. In both cases, those who wish to stifle these thoughts unintelligently become the antagonists the novels warn of.

Banning Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl because it?s ?too depressing? is akin to being a holocaust denier. Sure, we want our children to read happy stories, but do we want to gloss over reality??While Anne Frank may be brutally honest, it is a necessary work to show how negative choices can affect innocent people.

The Importance of Fiction

It is clear that people who ban Anne Frank wish to live in a fictional world. Sadly though, these are often the same people who wish to remove fiction all together by banning Harry Potter, claiming vaguely that, ?fantasy and reality could become confused for children.? Really?

imagination

Children need to have an imagination. It?s part of childhood, and psychologists know that it is an important part of the developmental process. Imagination needs to be encouraged. Imagination is the prime example of independent creative thought that moves society forward.

If Edison hadn?t first imagined the light bulb, we?d all be in the dark. If your children don?t know the difference between reality and pretend, it is your job as a parent to explain it to them.

Explain that fiction is used to tell stories that are both fun and complicated. The fables of Aesop use fiction as metaphor to teach important lessons. These same metaphors can be found in cartoons even to this day.

Are we trying to take away that important creative spirit and ?protect? our children from learning life?s most important lessons?

Infection Of Ideas

Ideas are infectious, like a virus, spreading from one person to the next through our words and stories. A good idea, like a good germ, can protect us, help us, and even help us to grow individually and socially. Censorship is the ?cure? for this virus of ideas; and it stops us in our tracks. It destroys our ?good germs? along with the bad and keeps us from moving forward as a people. The more good ideas we spread, the healthier and happier we will become.

Read as much as you can. Embrace new ideas. Be imaginative. Express and encourage independent thought. Share ideas. Spread those good germs. And stop censorship before our world rises to a temperature of Fahrenheit 451.

Fiscal Cliff = ?Enormous Hit? to the Economy, Holtz ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

America is headed for a fiscal cliff if members of Congress fail to act before the end of the year.

Many economists agree that if no action is taken, 2013 will begin with a $600 billion drag on the economy, or a 4 to 5 percent hit to GDP, due to a combination of tax hikes and budget cuts set to take effect. To put that in perspective, the knock to economic growth could be twice as much as current GDP growth forecasts for all of 2012 and more than any annual GDP growth in the last decade.

Former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin said this week at the CNBC Institutional Investor Delivering Alpha conference that the impact of the fiscal cliff could be worse than the fallout from the 2008 financial crisis, which resulted in the worst recession since the Great Depression.

A new report by the American Action Forum forecasts between 2.8 million and 10 million jobs could be lost as a result of falling off the cliff based on a set of GDP economic multipliers developed by former White House economic adviser Christina Romer. Additionally, failing to take action would decrease the likelihood small businesses will hire by nearly 20 percent, according to American Action Forum.

"This is an enormous hit" to the economy," Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the conservative American Action Forum and former director of the Congressional Budget Office says in the accompanying video.

Taxes hikes would make up about $440 billion of the $600 billion economic drag. A major point of political contention is whether or not to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for everyone or just for middle class Americans, making the wealthiest American's pay a greater share of their income in taxes.

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) signaled this week that liberals could be willing to push this debate until next year if a comprise cannot be reached with Republican lawmakers.

"[I]f we can't get a good deal ? a balanced deal that calls on the wealthy to pay their fair share ? then I will absolutely continue this debate into 2013, rather than lock in a long-term deal this year that throws middle-class families under the bus," said Murray on Monday.

While the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities came out in support of Murray -- "the economy won't immediately fall off a cliff if the scheduled tax and spending changes take effect," the center claims -- Holtz says the dangers of hitting the fiscal cliff are just too great. "I think the lesson here is that this is not something we should not even contemplate," he says.

According to the American Action Forum report, "failing to extend the 2001-2003 tax cuts would not only increase taxes on every single taxpayer in the country but would also put millions of lower middle class households who are not currently paying taxes back on the tax rolls at a rate of fifteen percent, and restore the marriage penalty."
