Threshold Pharmaceuticals Rises On Hope For Cancer Drug ...

Shares of Threshold Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:THLD) are rising after the company?s development partner, Merck KGaA (PINK:MKGAY) of Germany, said it is advancing a drug for pancreatic cancer into a large late-stage human study.

Merck sends Threshold a $30 million milestone payment as part of an agreement announced in February of last year. The drug, TH-302, is being tested with an older chemotherapy gemcitabine to treat advanced pancreatic cancer, a disease that leaves patients little hope for surviving. The partnership with Merck is potentially worth $525 million to Threshold if the product is ever approved and meets sales goals. Threshold has the right to co-market the drug in the US if the medicine wins government approval. ?

Shares of Threshold rose 4% to $5.12 midday Friday after rising by double digits earlier in the day. Shares of the company are up almost 250% over the past 12 months.

Merck expects to enroll 660 patients in the trial and the primary goal of the study is to show overall survival. The study?s design was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration under a so-called special protocol assessment.

The announcement by Merck and Threshold comes just three days after Celgene (NASDAQ:CELG) said a late-stage study of its drug Abraxane showed an improvement in overall survival. Abraxane, which is also being tested with gemcitabine, helped patients live longer than those only treated with the older chemo. About 35% of the Abraxane patients survived after one year vs. 22% of those only given gemcitabine, the current standard of care for pancreatic cancer. Abraxane is already approved for breast and lung cancer.

Some investors weren?t impressed with the recent Abraxane study results, leading to a decline in Celgene?s stock earlier this week. That should be seen as encouraging for investors in Threshold, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Joel Sendek says.

?A robust Abraxane result could have impeded enrollment in the (Threshold drug) trial, but we view the Abraxane results as just on the edge of what is considered a clinically meaningful benefit,? the analysts says in a note Friday.

Pancreatic cancer has been a difficult disease for developing new treatments. Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) ended a study of a drug last August after research advisers said it didn?t appear that the treatment worked.

There is no cure for pancreatic cancer. If the cancer spreads beyond the pancreas, average survival is less than a year, according to US health officials. About 95% of patients die within five years. Threshold says about 277,000 cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed worldwide every year, making up more than 2% of all cancers. The death toll is about 266,000 a year, the company says.

Both the Threshold and Celgene drugs are being studied to treat metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the most common form of pancreatic cancer. ??

?

LOS ANGELES ? ?Responsible Pet Owners Month is right around the corner in February, and several of VCA West Los Angeles? veterinarians wanted to share their tips for responsible pet ownership. Whether you need to hone your parental instincts or not, these 10 tips will certainly make your canine or feline happier and healthier.
  1. Animals are very good at coping and hiding their medical ailments. Because they cannot speak, by the time they start showing symptoms, their ailment can be very advanced. Therefore, if an owner is wondering if their pet should see a veterinarian for noted symptoms, odds are they should. ?-Dr. Johnny Chretin, DACVIM, Oncology
  2. Notify your veterinarian if you notice any sudden change in your pet?s weight (gain or loss) as such changes can indicate the presence of a significant health problem. Early recognition is key to ensuring a good outcome. ?-Dr. David Bruyette, DACVIM
  3. Many common foods that you eat may be harmful to your pet. Avoid feeding your pet foods such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and foods with caffeine such as coffee or tea. ?-Dr. Karen Eiler, DACVIM
  4. Keep your veterinarian?s business card in your wallet; if you have to take your pet to an emergency clinic they will appreciate this information. -Dr. Teresa Reiser, DACVECC
  5. It is important for an owner of a pet who has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition to obtain adequate information so that goals for their pet can be met. Speak with their veterinarian, research online, and/or seek referral to a specialist if necessary. -Dr. Johnny Chretin, DACVIM, Oncology
  6. Many people don?t realize that marijuana and tobacco are toxic to pets and they should not be exposed to the smoke or allowed to ingest the plant material. -Dr. Karen Eiler, DACVIM
  7. Notify your veterinarian if you notice any sudden change in water drinking and/or urinary habits as these changes can be signs of serious medical conditions such as kidney disease and diabetes. -Dr. David Bruyette, DACVIM
  8. Medications that are safe for people can be very harmful to your pet. Do not give your pet any medications without first consulting with a veterinarian. -Dr. Karen Eiler, DACVIM
  9. Food does NOT equal love ? feeding an unbalanced diet or feeding to excess can be bad for your pet?s health. -Dr. Teresa Rieser, DACVECC
  10. Exercise is just as important for pets as it is humans. It promotes mental and physical health and is a great time for bonding. -Dr. Johnny Chretin, DACVIM, Oncology

Braves' McCann aiming to be ready for opening day

By CHARLES ODUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:20 p.m. ET Jan. 23, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) - Brian McCann would like to be behind the plate on opening day and beat the projections which have him missing the start of the season.

Even so, the Braves catcher realizes he must be cautious in his return from major surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

McCann said Wednesday "things are ramping up" midway through his six-month rehabilitation schedule. He began throwing last week and started running two weeks ago.

After making six straight All-Star teams, McCann struggled last season as he tried to play through the injury. He hit only .230, easily a career low and almost 50 points below his career average.

McCann is expected to miss at least the first two weeks of the season. He said his goal is to convince team doctors in spring training otherwise.

He knows it won't be easy.

"I'm going to have to persuade a lot of people," McCann said. "I'm going to have to show them I'm ready to go and my shoulder is healed. I plan on doing that. I don't know if that's going to happen, but that's my mindset. I want to be ready as soon as possible. I keep getting better each day."

Braves general manager Frank Wren said doctors who will be wary of clearing the catcher for jarring hits which could cause a setback to the shoulder.

"With the surgery he had, he'll be able to hit, he'll be able to throw, he'll be 100 percent in those areas in spring training," Wren said. "It's just the last risk factor is diving and sliding. That's the area in the shoulder repair our doctors want to make sure is healed. The only way you can do that is with time. You can't rehab it to make it heal faster. That's going to be the last thing before they turn him loose."

If doctors hold firm to six months from the surgery for McCann's recovery, he would be cleared on April 15. If so, he would miss two weeks - a small price if it helps to raise the odds McCann can return to his All-Star form.

"I think his mindset is that he's going to be ready," Wren said. "Our doctors would rather be safe than sorry and will probably pull the reins back some. But if everything goes well in spring training, I don't think it will be more than a couple weeks before he is ready to rejoin us. I know that's probably two weeks too long for him, but we don't want to put him in a situation where he has any major setbacks."

McCann, who will be 29 when the season opens, is a career .279 hitter. His string of six straight All-Star appearances began in 2006, his first full season. He has hit at least 20 homers six times and has three seasons with more than 90 RBIs.

The Braves lost backup catcher David Ross, who signed with Boston. McCann's new backup is Gerald Laird, who played with Detroit last season.

Last season's low point for McCann came when he was left out of the starting lineup for the Braves' wild-card loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He finished the season with respectable power numbers - 20 homers and 67 RBIs - but he hit only .219 with seven homers and 21 RBIs after the All-Star break.

"He was swinging almost one-armed," said Braves second baseman Dan Uggla. "It's tough. But he's tough and such a competitor that he was going to play through the pain.

"I knew it was bothering him. You could tell after watching him hit and play for the last seven years he wasn't doing the things I was used to seeing him doing. I knew something wasn't right."

McCann said he "tried everything and it just didn't work for me."

"I could swing a bat," McCann said. "I just couldn't swing it and be effective like I wanted to. I still felt I could get a big hit for the team and I was still valuable, so I kept going.

"I feel like sometimes as an athlete you take a couple steps back to go a couple steps forward so I'm looking to coming back better than ever."

McCann said his shoulder already feels better than last season.

"I'm limited right now in what I can do in the gym but I feel amazing," he said. "I feel great.

"My range of motion is better now than it was last season, which kind of shows me it's been there for a while now, I just didn't notice it. It just got worse and worse."

Wren, McCann and five other players, including Uggla and Jason Heyward, spent Wednesday morning at City of Refuge, an Atlanta mission located only a few miles from Turner Field. The players helped serve a meal and visited a daycare for children of clients working at the facility.

The visit was part of the team's series of offseason public appearances through the Southeast.

Learning and memory may play a central role in synesthesia: Link to childhood toys containing magnetic colored letters

Jan. 23, 2013 ? People with color-grapheme synesthesia experience color when viewing written letters or numerals, usually with a particular color evoked by each grapheme (i.e., the letter 'A' evokes the color red). In a new study, researchers Nathan Witthoft and Jonathan Winawer of Stanford University present data from 11 color grapheme synesthetes who had startlingly similar color-letter pairings that were traceable to childhood toys containing magnetic colored letters.

Their findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Matching data from the 11 participants showed reliably consistent letter-color matches, both within and between testing sessions (data collected online at http://www.synesthete.org/). Participants' matches were consistent even after a delay of up to seven years since their first session.

Participants also performed a timed task, in which they were presented with colored letters for 1 second each and required to indicate whether the color was consistent with their synesthetic association. Their data show that they were able to perform the task rapidly and accurately.

Together, these data suggest that the participants' color-letter associations are specific, automatic, and relatively constant over time, thereby meeting the criteria for true synesthesia.

The degree of similarity in the letter-color pairings across participants, along with the regular repeating pattern in the colors found in each individual's letter-color pairings, indicates that the pairings were learned from the magnetic colored letters that the participants had been exposed to in childhood.

According to the researchers, these are the first and only data to show learned synesthesia of this kind in more than a single individual.

They point out that this does not mean that exposure to the colored letter magnets was sufficient to induce synesthesia in the participants, though it may have increased the chances. After all, many people who do not have synesthesia played with the same colored letter magnets as kids.

Based on their findings, Witthoft and Winawer conclude that a complete explanation of synesthesia must incorporate a central role for learning and memory.

GameStick Kickstarter adds new indie dev-targeted tier, trades $250 for six months of 100% revenue

GameStick Kickstarter adds new indie devtargeted tier, trades $250 for six months of 100% revenue

The PlayJam folks are taking another cue from the Android-powered Ouya with their own GameStick, today adding a dev-focused $250 tier to the already successful Kickstarter campaign. The twist with GameStick's dev tier is its aimed at indies, and it offers a six month window of 100 percent revenue on any games released before July 2013 (in addition to a GameStick bundle, of course). The dev version costs quite a bit more than the usual $79 asking price, but guaranteeing full revenue near launch may be a worthy tradeoff for developers looking to cash-in on early adopters (the industry standard is a 70 / 30 split, with game devs taking the larger share). Sadly, you won't get the unit any earlier than the general public; PlayJam's putting an April window on launch. The deal's only available to 250 developers -- or at least the first 250 people to buy in -- so interested parties may want to act quickly.
