US$ Up; EU Finance Ministers Kick Can; Japanese Exports Drops

The U.S. dollar gained against the majority of its counterparts as European finance ministers failed to agree on a debt-reduction package for Greece.? The dollar also rose to the highest level since April versus the Japanese yen after the nation?s exports decreased.?

The U.S. dollar Index, which his trading near a three-month high, got a boost yesterday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the U.S. risked falling back into recession unless lawmakers averted the so-called fiscal cliff, boosting demand for the safety of the U.S. dollar.?

However, the greenback gave back most of its overnight gains in early trading as the world?s reserve currency looks to be settling into tight ranges ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. tomorrow.?

Meanwhile, the economic docket showed that fewer Americans filed applications for unemployment benefits last week.? Jobless claims decreased by 41K to 410K, in line with expectations.? Later, leading indicators are expected to expand at a modest 0.1% in October, after gaining 0.6% in the month prior.? ?

Introducing: The secret tool that tens of thousands of the top ranked Google sites have been quietly using for years?

"Who Else Wants To Finally Get A #1 Google Ranking In As Little As 7 Days? And Drive A Minimum Of 789 Unique Visitors To Your Websites Per Day?"

Introducing the ONLY search engine optimization software product that has been 100% PROVEN to dramatically increase your rankings in Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

From This: 19 random visitors a day To This: Averaging 12,783 visitors a day!

Above is a real-life screenshot of 1 of my many websites. The site above gets, on average, 12,783 visitors PER DAY!

My name is Brad Callen. I?ve been marketing online since the early 2000s and have been fortunate enough to have generated millions of dollars solely from the internet.

I got my start online in the weight loss niche, marketing an eBook I?d written that is no longer on the market. It was an eBook called "Ultimate Weight Loss Revealed".

Here?s a picture of my very first website and product. Not too bad for having no idea what I was doing, eh? :-)

While marketing to that industry, my website achieved #1 and #2 Google rankings for every single major keyword related to the weight loss niche!

That?s pretty much unheard of to rank #1 or #2 for every single major keyword in a niche, but I did it all from my 2 bedroom apartment, on a dial-up internet connection!

At the time, My dinky little website selling my eBook was beating out fortune 500 companies like Jenny Craig and LA Weight Loss, who had million dollar marketing and advertising budgets. I was spending exactly $0.00 and I was doing this from my 2 bedroom apartment, on a dial up modem!

I?ve since moved out of the weight loss industry completely and into something I have much more passion for? the software/marketing industry. I?ve also taken my new websites to the top for their chosen keywords. Also, very competitive keywords, in that the owners of the sites competing for these keywords know "search engine optimization" extremely well.

We rank #1 in Google for the term: SEO Software

We rank #1 in Google for the term: Search Engine Optimization Software

We rank #1 in Google for the term: Keyword Research Software

These are just 2 of my many websites. I won?t bore you with ranking screenshots any longer. Afterall, when it all comes down to it, we?re not looking for #1 search engine rankings, we?re looking for an increase in the amount of money our business generates, right?

To give you an idea of what sort of money multiple #1 Google rankings can give you, take a look at the earnings screenshots below?

With the help of top Google, Yahoo, and MSN rankings, I?ve been able to pull in bi-weekly pay checks like the one below?

Asian shares rise on firm China, U.S. factory data

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares rose on Thursday as a survey showed China's manufacturing sector expanded for the first time in 13 months in November, adding to optimism after firm U.S. factory data that the global growth slowdown may have turned a corner.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> extended early gains to rise 0.8 percent to a one-week high.

Regional equities markets had already been buoyed by recovering risk appetite on easing tension in the Middle East and hopes that a Greece bailout will be agreed next week.

Resources-sensitive Australian shares <.axjo> surged 1.3 percent to a one-week high as miners climbed. London copper rose 0.5 percent to $7,732.75 a tonne while spot gold inched up 0.2 percent to $1,731.34 an ounce.

The China HSBC Flash Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index rose to a 13-month high of 50.4 in November, indicating factory activity was picking up and pointing to a reviving economic growth after seven consecutive quarters of slowing. A sub-index measuring output rose to 51.3, also the highest since October 2011.

"The data suggests the China's growth had hit a bottom in the third quarter and prospects are brightening for small and medium-sized firms in China," said Naohiro Niimura, a partner at research and consulting firm Market Risk Advisory.

While the report is positive, the rise in prices of base metals, for which China is the world's top consumer, will be contained given the high level of Chinese inventories, he said.

"But shares get a boost because they are driven by sentiment and because contained base metal prices under an improving economy will help companies boost their earnings," Niimura said.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> jumped 1.2 percent to a 6-1/2-month high as exporters were lifted by hopes the weakening yen would boost their earnings. <.t/>

The yen has come under pressure since the Japanese government announced a December 16 election last week.

The opposition Liberal Democratic Party, which is tipped to win, on Wednesday promised a big extra budget and a policy accord with the central bank on aggressive monetary stimulus to prevent the economy from sliding into recession.

The yen fell to a 7-1/2-month low versus the dollar of 82.59 on Thursday, while the yen also hit a 6-1/2-month low of 106.26 yen against the euro.

"Yen, I think, is being driven by anticipation of LDP led government forcing aggressive monetary easing," said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.

Traders said the markets may be capped as activity slows ahead of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Niimura said as hedge funds close their books this month and next, any swing in prices should be seen as more related to their position adjustments than a change in real risk appetite.

GREECE DEAL AWAITED

European shares <.fteu3> rose for a third straight session on Wednesday as investors bet on a positive outcome to negotiations over aid to Greece after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said a deal to release emergency aid to Greece was still possible next Monday when euro ministers meet.

The expectations of a Greek deal helped the euro rebound to a two-week high against the dollar of $1.28685, after being initially sold off after international lenders to Greece failed to reach a deal to release the aid on Wednesday.

"Efforts to avert a Greek default may provide short-term relief for the euro, but the measures will only help to buy more time as Greece persistently seeks further external assistance," said David Song, currency analyst at DailyFX, who is maintaining a bearish view on the single currency.

Overnight, U.S. stocks ended modestly higher but volume was one of the year's lowest on the day ahead of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.

U.S. manufacturing grew in November at its quickest pace in five months, with a rise in domestic demand hinting that factories could provide a boost to economic growth in the fourth quarter, while those from Europe are due out later on Thursday.

A ceasefire between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers took hold on Thursday after eight days of conflict, easing concerns about supply from oil-producing Middle East.

U.S. crude rose 0.3 percent to $87.66 a barrel while Brent inched up 0.2 percent to $111.06.

A rallying stock market boosted sentiment in Asian credit markets, tightening the spreads on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by 3 basis points.

Suburban NYC mom sentenced in prostitution case

Andrew Kelly / Reuters

Anna Gristina sits in the Manhattan Supreme Court for sentencing in New York, Nov. 20, 2012.

By Brynn Gingras, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- The suburban mother of four accused of running an upscale escort service in Manhattan has been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty in late September to one count of promoting prostitution.

When a judge asked if she had anything to say in court Tuesday, Anna Gristina said, "It's probably better that I don't, Your Honor."?

The 44-year-old Gristina's guilty plea stemmed from a July 2011 tryst she allegedly arranged involving two women and an undercover officer posing as a client. She was arrested in February and spent four months behind bars, which covers the jail portion of her sentence. She also faces five years probation.

Though she will not serve additional jail time, Gristina could face deportation to her native Scotland because she has pleaded guilty to committing a crime. Her attorney, Norm Pattis, said her legal team hasn't heard from federal officials on the matter at this point.

Prosecutors had said their five-year investigation revealed Gristina had a roster of wealthy, well-placed clients and boasted of law enforcement connections during 15 years in a business that made her millions.

She maintained she was merely starting a dating service.?

After Tuesday's sentencing, the Manhattan district attorney's office said in a statement, ?There is nothing glamorous about prostitution. Anna Gristina rented women?s bodies for profit, which makes her a pimp. That also makes her a felon, and the court has now issued that judgment. She has no one to blame but herself for her decisions.?

S&P 500 gains for fourth session on light volume

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks finished modestly higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 up for a fourth session, although volume was one of the year's lowest on the day ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Investors welcomed news that a ceasefire was declared to end the flare-up in violence between Israel and the Palestinians, though the lack of a deal to release emergency aid for Greece limited the market's advance.

Investors also remained anxious about the mandatory tax increases and spending cuts that would go into effect in the new year if a deal is not reached to prevent it - known as the "fiscal cliff" - though policymakers are not expected to get back to negotiations until after Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday.

About 4.76 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with year-to-date daily average volume of 6.5 billion shares. On Thursday, the U.S. stock market will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, and on Friday, it will close early at 1 p.m. (1800 GMT).

"Usually on patriotic holidays, which I think Thanksgiving is one, we often see a rally on a light volume. So I wouldn't be surprised if we see that on Friday, if there is no major news," said J.J. Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.

"So far this week, we have heard good news in terms of (the) fiscal cliff. Both sides seem to be playing nice, but we will start to see big day-to-day swings (in the market) from next week, when we get more details."

Greece's international lenders failed again to reach a deal to release emergency aid to the debt-saddled country. Lenders will try again next Monday, but Germany signaled that significant divisions remain.

A truce between Israel and Hamas gave stocks some support around midday after Egypt announced a ceasefire would come into effect later in the day.

Fears that the fiscal cliff discussions in Washington could be drawn out or yield no resolution have been at the forefront of investors' minds in recent weeks. Combined with concerns about the euro zone's continued debt problems, the worries had driven a sell-off that has taken more than 5 percent off the S&P 500 since Election Day in early November.

Positive comments from U.S. politicians that they will work to find common ground have helped the S&P 500 recoup some of that loss in recent sessions.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 48.38 points, or 0.38 percent, to end at 12,836.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> added 3.22 points, or 0.23 percent, to finish at 1,391.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 9.87 points, or 0.34 percent, to close at 2,926.55.

St Jude Medical shares tumbled 12.2 percent to $31.37 after an inspection report from health regulators raised new safety concerns about one of the company's leads that are used with implantable defibrillators, analysts said.

A modest gain in International Business Machines helped the Dow outperform the other indexes. IBM rose 0.6 percent to $190.29.

Dow component Hewlett-Packard Co climbed 2 percent to close on Wednesday at $11.94, recouping a small slice of Tuesday's loss, when the stock slid to a 10-year low after the computer and printer maker reported a $5 billion charge related to "accounting improprieties" at Autonomy, a British software company that HP bought last year. At least two brokerages have cut their ratings on HP's stock, while analysts at several firms lowered their price targets.

Salesforce.com Inc jumped 8.8 percent to $158.78 a day after the business software provider reported results that beat Wall Street's expectations for the third quarter and maintained its outlook for the rest of the year.

But Deere & Co dragged on the S&P 500 after the world's largest farm equipment maker reported a weaker-than-expected quarterly profit. Its stock lost 3.7 percent to $82.83.

The market did not derive much direction from the day's economic data, with initial jobless claims falling last week, as expected.

Other data showed manufacturing picked up at its quickest pace in five months in November, while the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading for November showed the consumer sentiment index improved only slightly from the previous month.

The focus will likely turn to retailers on Friday as analysts try to assess how strong the holiday shopping season will be this year, according to Kurt Brunner, portfolio manager at Swarthmore Group in Philadelphia.

The S&P 500 retail sector index <.spxrt> was up 0.6 percent.

Holiday shopping traditionally kicks off the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, as stores offer deals and discounts to lure consumers.

Advancers beat decliners by a ratio of about 2 to 1 on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.

Search Challenge: A thousand years of Thanksgiving?

Search Challenge: A thousand years of Thanksgiving?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill.

As you know, Thanksgiving has a long tradition in the United States. (See our earlier SearchResearch question on about traditional cranberry recipes from 2010.)

In the US, we've ritually celebrated Thanksgiving annually since 1621 when the Pilgrims first sat down to celebrate a more-or-less successful harvest. There were occasional "Thanksgiving" celebrations before that, but It's been an official holiday since 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens."

But other countries have much longer-standing festivals of harvest celebrations.

So here's a search challenge question to contemplate this Thanksgiving season:

Can you find another country that has celebrated a annual Thanksgiving festival in November more-or-less continually for at least the past 1000 years? If so, what's the name of that festival?

As you know, we ritually consume turkey, cranberries, pumpkins, and potatoes. For extra credit:

What food is ritually consumed is this other country's long-lasting Thanksgiving celebration?

For triple credit:

What's the traditional reason that particular food is eaten?

When you send in your answer, let us know about how long it took you to find the answer and what your research process was. My answer will be posted tomorrow!

ANTIQUES: THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES ? Carolina HeartStrings

By Alessa, on November 20th, 2012

This is not the first time that I?ve had something to share that reminds me that I owe a great ?Thank you? to my Aunt Irma.?? My famous pack-rat aunt was often ridiculed by others in the family for her ways but she has left me with a wealth of interesting items including her button collection.? Some items have been valuable little treasures and others more whimsical.?? I regret that I cannot find the paperwork and original box that this came in that she, of course, kept it in.? ?Her items were always stored in original packaging with little hand written notes regarding their origin and the date it was acquired.

This light was made by the Aerolux Light Corporation who made these fanciful bulbs for forty or so years starting in the 1930s.?? This one probably dates from the 1940s.? The bulbs actually contain a gas and the design elements were covered with phosphors.? ?I worry that I will wear it out and only turn it on occasionally.

Isn?t it pretty?

So, ?Thank you? Aunt Irma.? Thank you for all the Sunday afternoons that we spent together in my childhood when you dug out your treasures to show me.? They are just as magical now as they were then.? Thank you for leaving me so many wonderful things and thank you for the memories.
