With many people on the East coast in the US sent home from work or school yesterday in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, I thought I would examine how Internet usage may have been impacted.
Unlike the data we typically publish, which focuses on national coverage, the data below was collected from a singular US city on the east coast of the United States that was directly in Sandy?s path.
Yesterday, in this city, Internet usage between 9am and 5pm as a whole saw an increase of 114% over the equivalent period on a typical Monday in October. Traffic levels were elevated throughout the entire day, but returned to normal as subscribers began to go to bed around 11pm?sadly causing many to miss David Letterman?s amazing audience free Late Show.
No single application was responsible for the surge; usage patterns were, for the most part, similar to what is observed on weekday evenings.
That being said, movies were certainly a popular way for Internet users to ride out the storm ? we observed Netflix traffic volume increased by more than 150% during the same 9am to 5pm period?a figure they confirmed just as I was writing this blog.
Communications applications such as Skype (up 122%) also saw a significant increase, with a large spike occurring around 5pm.? While it is unclear about what the exact cause of this spike could be, I wouldn?t be surprised if it was from subscribers in the Sandy impacted city having conversations with those in other cities as they got home from work.
Here in Waterloo, Ontario we were lucky and only experienced the outer edge of Sandy.? For those impacted directly by the storm, all of us here at Sandvine hope you made it through the storm safely, and hope the clean up and recovery is speedy.

Superstorm Sandy lashed the Eastern United States as it made landfall along the New Jersey coast, packing torrential rains and wind gusts and knocking out electricity to millions.
The initial impact was severe: making rivers out of coastal roads, forcing those who waited too long to be rescued by boats or fearfully ride out. Power was out for hundreds of thousands in New York City and an estimated 6.2 million across the East. Stock trading will be closed in the U.S. for a second day ? the first time the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888. Schools and public transportation were closed and city streets were abandoned as the storm moved over a region of 50 million.

Intel's taking its 48-core processor and applying it to a field beyond academia: the world of mobile electronics. The company this morning announced intentions to slip the 48-core bad boy into future tablets and smartphones (emphasis on future), with CTO Justin Rattner saying the mobile implementation could arrive "much sooner" than the 10-year window predicted by researchers.
Aside from the thrilling world of linear algebra and fluid dynamics that the chipset is currently used for, Intel says it could offload processor-intensive functions across several cores, effectively speeding up various functions (say, video streaming). The availability of so many cores also means faster multitasking possibilities than the current dual- or quad-core offerings in modern smartphones and tablets -- just imagine a world where two Angry Birds games can run simultaneously in the background without affecting the paradoxical game of Tiny Wings you decided to play instead. Hey, we understand -- it's just a better bird game. No big. Sadly, few software developers are crafting their wares (warez?) to take advantage of multi-core processing as is, so it's gonna take more than just the existence of Intel's 48-core chip to make its vision a reality.

It seems that Obama and Romney are tripping over each other to downsize tax incentives for donations to charities in the US.? Here is an interesting article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy entitled ?Nonprofit Leaders Urge Obama and Romney to Protect Tax Break?.? If Obama caps donation incentives at 28% or Romney effectively eliminates incentives for large gifts by capping deductions then it will be interesting to see how this impacts Canada.? Currently the incentives for giving in Canada are far superior to the US.? For example, a wealthy person in Ontario may save 48-65% on their donation (depending on whether it is cash or appreciated marketable securities) .? My specific thought or concern is that as the gap becomes greater, for example Mr. Romney?s proposals are accepted, then some people with assets and income and families in both the US and Canada may increasingly prefer to make the donation in Canada to a Canadian charity or foundation as they will obtain far greater fiscal benefits.?

An interesting letter from a number of US charities with my emphasis:
?The charitable deduction is different than other itemized deductions in that it encourages individuals to give a portion of their income to support worthwhile causes,? the letters said. ?It rewards a selfless act, and it encourages taxpayers to give more funds to charities than they would otherwise have given.?
There were 1.8 million US registered charities and over the last 2 years about 400,000 of them have been revoked for non-filing of the 990.? Perhaps the US should do a better job of ensuring that the remaining 1.4 million are really ?worthwhile causes? that are deserving of state support.? We have the same problem here in Canada - there is no obligation on the part of charities to show that they have any public benefit.? Secondly, It is interesting they use the phrase ?selfless act? - while this is true for many, unfortunately increasingly some of the biggest donations feel more like sponsorship arrangements or mergers/acquisitions than donations.? Perhaps selfless acts should receive tax incentives and less selfless donations or arrangements should receive less incentives or none at all.?

Cutting Loose: An Adult?s Guide to Coming to Terms with Your Parents? Howard M. Halpern calls the interactions that develop between the inner child in us and the inner child in our parents ?songs and dances? because, he explains, they have a ?repetitious, almost rhythmic, pattern. The same words, the same music and the same dance steps are performed over and over again.? Writes Halpern:
There is no underestimating the difficulty in modifying the song and dance routines you have developed with your parents, but as you become aware of just what the song and dance is that you and your parents perform so ritualistically, then you can begin to change the tune. Recognizing the nuances of interactions so habitual as to be almost beyond self-observation is no easy matter, but once you see the dance you can begin to change the words, the music, and the steps.
I?m in the process right now of having to choreograph a whole new dance. And with no training as a choreographer, that?s a little tough.
Thankfully I have a team of mentors and caring friends that can help me identify the wrong moves ? the clumsy turns and the ugly transitions ? because my gestures are so ingrained in me that my body doesn?t want to do anything else. Like a kid with sensory-integration issues who has been walking on his tiptoes for the first five years of his life ? his little legs locked in a position, not allowing him go down on his heels without lots of physical therapy ? I?m stuck in an uncomfortable pose, and I don?t know how I got there.
But here?s my progress: I no longer think it looks right. Even as my thoughts follow certain pathways that have been carved over time, I now know there is another way, and that I can be a new beginning. I know now, to quote the words of French feminist Luce Irigaray: ?I have an origin. I am an origin.?
I am an origin. Through lots of discipline, and cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychotherapy, I can begin new patterns of behavior for the generation after me: for David, Katherine, and their families. Granted, their gene pools afford them plenty of challenges, or should we say ?character-building opportunities.? But, with diligent recovery and some help from my higher power, I can teach them a new dance based on integrity, truth, love, respect, and compassion.
Similar to the dance comparison that Halpern makes, my therapist shared with me the analogy of a backpack ? You are carrying around these heavy stones most of your life. Something?um, let?s say a nervous breakdown?makes you assess what, exactly, is in this burdensome bag of yours. You look at the rocks and say, ?Self, Why in God?s name am I carrying this?? So you toss one out. Then you get to mile seven, and ask yourself the same question: ?Self, why in the hell is this in here? It?s not like I can eat it, drink it, or wrap myself in it. What is its purpose anyway?? Each few miles your baggage gets lighter with the right questions and follow through.
I guess this process has something to do with forgiveness. As Beyond Blue reader Frank Hulse shared with me in a recent e-mail, again a backpack analogy:
Forgiveness isn?t easy. It requires a conscious decision to change our minds and wipe the slate clean. But here?s the way to think about forgiveness. Picture yourself shouldering a backpack with a dozen 10-pound bags of potatoes. You make the decision to forgive someone?possibly yourself?but each time you forgive all you can manage is 10 percent forgiveness. You keep trying though and after ten separate attempts you finally achieve success and the person is forgiven. Each time you manage a bit of forgiveness your load drops by 10 pounds until eventually you?re no longer carrying that heavy load. It?s worth it even if you have to forgive someone ten times.
According to Halpern, the reward is worth it, if we can just keep on keeping on, making small revisions and alterations along the way:

Hurricane Sandy Liveblog: Atlantic City flooding as storm surge begins (+video)
Hurricane Sandy has forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents ahead of coastal flooding due to storm surge. How bad will the storm surge be? Snow has begun falling in parts of North Carolina, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

Hurricane Sandy is strengthening, and moving a little slower as it starts its turn west, according to the 11 a.m. National Hurricane Center advisroy.
Sandy now has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, up from 85 mph at the 8 a.m.
It has slowed its north-northwestern movement from 20 mph, to 18 mph. And is expected to make landfall this evening "just south of the Southern New Jersey coast."

If high winds and storm surge weren't enough, several states are now experiencing snow as Sandy mixes with the low pressure ridge along the East Coast, in the Appalachian range, some higher elevations of North Carolina and Tennessee are already getting snow.
?And the National Weather Service expect blizzard conditions in some higher elevations of West Virginia.

In the Great Smokey Mountains, there are reports that 6.5 inches had fallen in places and that Highway 441 near the Newfound Gap was now closed. The headline on?Knoxnews.com:
"Snow from 'Frankenstorm' already hitting Smokies; 441 closed."
The National Weather Service report for Morristown, Tenn. in eastern Tennessee, has a Winter Storm Warning through Wednesday morning. The report includes:
_ A deep plume of moister will move over the spine of the Appalacians, result in in the potential for rain showers and snow showers in the valleys and some locally heavier snowfall across the higher elevations.
- Gusty northwesterly winds associated with this strengthening storm system will increase to 25-35 mph, and may gust up to 40-50 mph across the mountains.
The greatest potential for significant snowfall will be along the higher mountains ? with 6-12 inches possible above 3,000 feet.
But the National Hurricane Center is still predicting larger snowfalls in some areas of the Appalachians.

Atlantic City flooding as storm surge begins
Monday 9:10 a.m.
With the arrival of the morning high tide, flooding has begun in the streets of Atlantic City. There are unconfirmed reports that parts of Atlantic City's boardwalk have collapsed.
In Atlantic City, winds are gusting to tropical storm strength. All 12 casinos were shut down at 4 p.m. Sunday after Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for the entire state.
By 7:30 a.m., the streets immediately around the new Revel casino and hotel were covered with more than a foot of water, witnesses said.
Parts of Black Horse Pike in West Atlantic City, Route 30 and Route 9 in Absecon, Route 559 in Somers Point and Route 322 in Hamilton are already flooded, county officials said. Roads in Hamilton Township and Mays Landing were also impassable, reports NJ.com.
In Cape May the ocean has also breached the main oceanfront drive, Ocean Avenue, near the city's southern end, the Associated Press reports
New Jersey is also seeing power outages. As of 3:30 a.m., PSE&G is reporting 829 customers without power due to the early effects of Hurricane Sandy. Of that total, 794 of the outages are located in Deptford Township in Gloucester County. As of 5 a.m., JCP&L reported about 5,000 customers without power in Burlington and Ocean county, including more than 4,000 in Toms River, reports NJ.com.

The National Hurricane Center 8 a.m. report indicates that Hurricane Sandy is now starting to pick up speed (moving at 20 mph) and turn west. The blocking high pressure area in the north Atlantic will send Sandy on a sharper turn toward the coast later Monday morning.
Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft have clocked Sandy's sustained winds at 85 mph, with higher gusts, as far as way as 175 miles from the eye of the hurricane. As we've said this is a BIG storm. Tropical storm force winds (above 39 mph) extend almost 500 miles from the center of the storm. That means tropical force winds are now pummeling the coasts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Easter Virginia.

Storm Surge Outlook
?Monday 8:15 a.m.
As predicted, Hurricane Sandy has strengthened in the last 24 hours. It has begun it's turn toward the? East Coast. The barometric pressure has dropped to record levels, the winds have picked up to about 85 miles per hour, and Sandy has grown in size. Sandy now spans 1,000 miles. While it's still at least 300 miles from landfall, tropical storm strength winds (sustained winds above 39 mph) are already being felt on shore.
Record storm surges are expected, which is why hundreds of thousands of residents from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas. Some 375,000 people were ordered to leave lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City.
NOAA and the National Hurricane Center are predicting storm surges of 6-11 feet in the New York City area. How bad is that? For context, during Hurricane Irene last year, the storm surge at Battery Park hit 4.4 feet. The maximum surge during Irene was 4.5 feet in the New York City area, at Kings Point.
Currently, the storm surge is already at 4 feet at Kings Point, according to the Weather Channel.

After the Patriots gave up an early 50-yard scoring play, Tom Brady responded by leading five straight touchdown drives Sunday and New England (5-3) ran over the St. Louis Rams 45-7 in the NFL's annual regular-season game at Wembley Stadium.
"I hope they enjoyed the game today, all the fans," Brady said, "I know it got out of hand there, but that's how the Patriots like it. So it was a fun game for us."
Yes, for one night at least, the Pats - Expats on this occasion- were back to blowing away opponents. According to Brady, though, there's still plenty of room for improvement.
"We've got a long way to go. ... We certainly haven't played our best football yet," he said. "Coach says the season doesn't start until after Thanksgiving, and it isn't even Halloween yet."
This offense is looking quite scary, though.
New England had at least 350 yards of total offense for the 17th straight game, breaking an NFL record set by the Rams in 1999-2000, back when Kurt Warner was leading "The Greatest Show on Turf."
This was arguably the greatest show put on by a team in London since the NFL started staging regular-season games here in 2007 - or at least the most dominating. New England gave the British crowd a first-hand look at the league's top-ranked offense.
Brady led four straight touchdown drives for a commanding 28-7 lead by halftime, and then hit Brandon Lloyd for a 9-yard score to start the third quarter.
Brady passed for 304 yards with four touchdowns and tight end Rob Gronkowski caught eight passes for 146 yards and two scores. Lloyd also had two touchdown catches, while Stevan Ridley ran for 127 yards and a score as the Patriots put themselves atop the AFC East heading into their off week.
The Rams (3-5), who also will be off, are last in the NFC West after losing two in a row.
The Rams struck first when Sam Bradford hit Chris Givens with a 50-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the game - exactly the kind of statement the team hoped to make to ruffle the favored Patriots.
But St. Louis, which arrived in London on Tuesday, three days before the Patriots, to get better adjusted to the time difference, was the team that looked jetlagged the rest of the way.
"You can't ask for a better start to the game. First time we touched the ball we go down and score," Bradford said. "It just all fell apart from there."
After the Rams took the lead, Brady led a 78-yard drive to tie the score with a 19-yard pass to Lloyd. On their next drive, coach Bill Belichick opted to go for it on fourth down at the 1-yard line, and Shane Vereen broke into the end zone.
It was the only fourth down the Rams forced until the middle of the third quarter, when the Patriots had to settle for a 26-yard field goal to make it 38-7.
In between, Brady hit Gronkowski on a 7-yard touchdown pass and Ridley had another 1-yard run into the end zone 10 seconds before halftime.
Gronkowski celebrated both his touchdowns with theatrical spikes to fire up the crowd, doing a high-stepping strut before the first one to mimic a local tourist attraction. That led to questions about what the move was called, a Changing of the Gronk, a FrankenGronk, or what?
"That was a `Palace Guard,"' the tight end joked.
Even Brady was a bit perplexed.
"I don't know what the hell he was doing on that first one," Brady said. "I was trying to get out of the way. He needs some work on that."
St. Louis only had one other scoring opportunity in the first half, but botched the snap on a 52-yard field goal attempt.
Givens' touchdown gave him a reception of at least 50 yards for the fifth straight game, a rookie record, but he left temporarily with a toe injury and only managed two more catches after returning. Running back Steven Jackson was also largely shut down, finishing with 23 yards on seven carries. Bradford was 23 of 31 for 205 yards and added an interception in the fourth quarter before being replaced by backup Kellen Clemens near the end.
"It's embarrassing the way we played tonight," Bradford said. "Just embarrassing."
New England became the first team to win two games in London, having beaten Tampa Bay here in 2009. As expected, the Patriots also had the majority of crowd support from the 84,004 fans at Wembley, despite the Rams being the designated home team.
That, however, didn't stop backup quarterback Ryan Mallett from getting booed when taking a knee to run out the clock - one of the few aspects of the American version of football the British crowd didn't seem to appreciate.
Belichick had no complaints about the atmosphere, though.
"The stadium was great," he said. "Playing on grass is always good. ... It's good to see the jerseys muddy, grass stains. Guys picking up dirt out of their facemasks, stuff like that. We don't see a lot of that back in the States."

Arizona rallies to beat No. 10 USC 39-36
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? His team trailing by 15 in the third quarter, Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez urged his players to show a little life. Even after the Wildcats scored, they ? and much of the stadium ? remained quiet.
Matt Scott woke them up.
Scott didn't get a chance to play in Arizona's shootout loss to Southern California last year, but sure put his imprint on the rematch, accounting for 469 total yards and four touchdowns in the Wildcats' 39-36 upset of the 10th-ranked Trojans on Saturday.
"I've said this before: Matt Scott's a stud," Rodriguez said. "He's phenomenal. He's a competitor."
The Wildcats (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) had come up short in close games during their first season under Rodriguez and appeared to be headed toward another disappointment as USC receiver Marqise Lee raced past them into the Pac-12 record book.
Scott wouldn't let Arizona come up short again.
The fifth-year senior ran for 100 yards and got Arizona's comeback started with a 10-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. He threw for 369 yards, 259 of that on 10 catches by Austin Hill, and finished 27 for 50 passing.
Scott capped his day with his third touchdown pass, a 7-yarder to David Richards that put Arizona up 39-28 with just over five minutes left. He was wobbly and unable to play on Arizona's final possession after taking a hard hit, but had already done enough to give the Wildcats their biggest win under Rodriguez.
"Matt is a warrior," Hill said.
Marqise Lee had a huge day for USC (6-2, 4-2), eclipsing the Pac-12 record for receiving yards by halftime. He finished with 16 catches for 345 yards and two touchdowns, ending up with 469 all-purpose yards after a couple of big kick returns.
Matt Barkley put up big numbers, too, matching Carson Palmer's school record for 400-yard games with his third, throwing for 493 yards and three touchdowns on 31-of-49 passing.
USC finished with 618 total yards and pulled within three on Silas Redd's 10-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, but couldn't overcome five turnovers ? two on interceptions by Barkley ? and 13 penalties for 117 yards.
The Trojans' last shot ended when Barkley's heave on the final play was swatted down, leaving them stuck on 799 wins as a program while putting a huge dent in their national championship hopes.
"It was a very discouraging loss," USC coach Lane Kiffin said. "It wasn't about effort ? I thought our players had great effort. We made a lot of mistakes and weren't able to catch up."
USC won last year's offensive shootout 48-41, surviving Arizona's second-half comeback thanks to Barkley's school-record 468 yards and four touchdowns passing.
They spent the first half of the rematch trying to get out of their own way.
Barkley threw his two interceptions ? and nearly several others ? and overthrew tight end Xavier Grimble in the end zone on a fourth down. Redd also lost a fumble in the first half and safety Jawanza Starling lost a fumble on an interception return.
USC also had eight penalties for 79 yards in the first half, including a taunting call against safety T.J. McDonald that extended Arizona's opening drive. Scott capped that by hitting Johnny Jackson on an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Arizona had a few discipline problems of its own.
The Wildcats had a 1-yard touchdown run by Ka'Deem Carey wiped out by a holding call and kicker John Bonano pushed a 37-yard field goal wide right after another hold erased his make from 27 on the first half's final play.
USC shook off its mistakes behind some big plays in the first half by Barkley and Lee.
Barkley connected with Grimble on a 12-yard touchdown early in the second quarter, then found Lee late, hitting him in stride for a 49-yard touchdown that put the Trojans up 14-10.
Lee kept getting open and Barkley kept finding him, setting up a 3-yard touchdown run by D.J. Morgan that put the Trojans up 21-13 late in the second quarter.
Lee opened the second half with a 44-yard touchdown catch to put USC up 28-13 and break the Pac-12 record of 293 yards receiving set by Oregon State's Mike Hass against Boise State in 2004.
"His performance was unbelievable," Barkley said. "We all know he's a special player, but to play like that and to have a game like had tonight is really something."
So was Scott.
He scored on the 10-yard run, then found Dan Buckner on a 9-yard touchdown pass to pull Arizona within 28-26 after the Wildcats recovered a fumble by Morgan.
Carey scored on a 7-yard touchdown run the next drive, Scott extended the lead to 39-28 with his TD pass to Richards.
Redd scored and USC got ball back for a final drive, but came up short when Arizona knocked Barkley's final heave harmlessly to the turf, giving Arizona its first tight win after disappointing losses Stanford and Oregon State.
"Our guys have a lot of resiliency and we hung on at the end," Rodriguez said. "It feels good to win a close one."

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes and artillery struck rebellious suburbs east of Damascus, while rebels attacked regime positions elsewhere near the capital Sunday, violence that marred the third day of what was meant to be a four-day holiday truce, activists said.
A U.N-backed truce declared for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha has failed to take hold, with fighting reported from the start. Activists said more than 150 people were killed Friday, the start of the holiday, and more than 120 people on the second day, similar to previous daily casualty tolls.
The cease-fire was seen as a long shot from the outset. The international mediator in Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, failed to get firm commitments from all combatants.
At least one rebel-linked radical Islamic group, the al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra, rejected the truce outright. In a video posted this week, the leader of al-Qaida, Ayman al-Zawahri, urged "Muslims everywhere" to support Syria's uprising.
The truce was called as the two sides were battling over strategic targets in a largely deadlocked civil war. They include a military base near a main north-south highway, the main supply route to Aleppo, Syria's largest city, where regime forces and rebels have been fighting house-to-house. It appears each side feared the other could exploit a lull to improve its positions.
With the unraveling of the cease-fire, it's unclear what the international community can do next.
The holiday truce marked the first attempt in six months to reduce the bloodshed in Syria, where activists say more than 35,000 people have been killed in 19 months.
Brahimi has not said what would follow a cease-fire. Talks between Syrian President Bashar Assad and the Syrian opposition on a peaceful transition are blocked, since the Syrian leader's opponents say they will not negotiate unless Assad resigns, a step he has refused to take.
The international community has been unable to rally around other options, including tougher U.N. Security Council action, arming the rebels or direct military intervention.
The failure of the truce to take hold "highlighted the impotence of the international community's approach" to the Syria conflict, said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center, a think tank.
In April, Brahimi's predecessor as Syria mediator, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, tried to launch a more comprehensive plan ? an open-ended cease-fire, to be enforced by hundreds of U.N. monitors and followed by talks on a political transition. Annan's plan failed to gain traction, and after an initial decrease in violence, his proposed cease-fire collapsed.
In fighting Sunday, Syrian warplanes struck the eastern Damascus suburbs of Arbeen, Harasta and Zamalka to try to drive out rebels, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles information from activists in Syria. The Observatory also reported shelling attacks in these areas.
Local activists and another opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, said warplanes struck Arbeen and Harasta. The LCC said eight people were killed Sunday in Damascus and its suburbs.
Three amateur videos posted online showed warplanes flying over the eastern suburbs.
One video showed two huge clouds of smoke rising from what was said to be Arbeen, and the sound of an airplane could be heard in the background. It was not clear if the video showed the aftermath of shelling or an airstrike.
Another video showed destruction inside the Sheikh Moussa mosque in Harasta. Windows and doors were blown out, glass and debris scattered across the mosque's floor. The narrator broke down as he was heard saying: "Where are the Muslims? Our mosques are being bombed and no one cares."
Also in Harasta, a video showed widespread destruction, including rows of buildings with shattered windows, gaping holes and shell-pocked facades.
The videos appeared consistent with Associated Press reporting in the area.
In Douma, another Damascus suburb, rebels wrested three positions from regime forces, including an unfinished high-rise building that had been used by regime snipers, according to the Observatory and Mohammed Saeed, a local activist.
Fighting was also reported near Maaret al-Numan, a town along the Aleppo-Damascus highway that rebels seized earlier this month. Opposition fighters have also besieged a nearby military base and repeatedly attacked government supply convoys heading there. The Observatory said the Syrian air force fired missiles and dropped barrel bombs ? makeshift weapons made of explosives stuffed into barrels ? on villages near the base.
The Syrian government has accused the rebels of violating the cease-fire from the start. The state-run news agency SANA said opposition fighters carried out attacks in a number of areas, including in Aleppo and the eastern town of Deir el-Zour.

Satellite images suggest airstrike on Sudan site
CAIRO (AP) ? Satellite images of the aftermath of an explosion at a Sudanese weapons factory this past week suggest the site was hit in an airstrike, a U.S. monitoring group said Saturday.
The Sudanese government has accused Israel of bombing its Yarmouk military complex in Khartoum, killing two people and leaving the factory in ruins.
The images released by the Satellite Sentinel Project to The Associated Press on Saturday showed six 52-foot (16-meter) wide craters near the epicenter of Wednesday's explosion at the compound.
Military experts consulted by the project found the craters to be "consistent with large impact craters created by air-delivered munitions, Satellite Sentinel Project spokesman Jonathan Hutson told the AP.
The target may have been around 40 shipping containers seen at the site in earlier images. The group said the craters center on the area where the containers had been stacked. It did not comment on the allegations of Israeli involvement or who might be behind the strikes.
Jonah Leff, who monitors Sudan for the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey and was not connected to the project, reviewed the images on Saturday and agreed with the group's assessment.
Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied striking the site. Instead, they accused Sudan of playing a role in an Iranian-backed network of arms shipments to Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel believes Sudan is a key transit point in the circuitous route that weapons take to the Islamic militant groups in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
Sudan was a major hub for al-Qaida militants and remains a transit for weapon smugglers and African migrant traffickers. Israeli officials believe arms that originate in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas go through Sudan before crossing Egypt's lawless Sinai desert and into Gaza through underground tunnels.
The Satellite Sentinel Project is a partnership between the Enough Project, a Washington-based anti-genocide advocacy group and DigitalGlobe, which operates three commercial satellites and provides geospatial analysis. The project was founded last year with support from actor George Clooney, and in the past has used satellite images to monitor the destruction of villages by Sudanese troops in the country's multiple war zones.
Opened in 1996, Yarmouk is one of two known state-owned weapons manufacturing plants in the Sudanese capital. Sudan prided itself in having a way to produce its own ammunition and weapons despite United Nations and U.S. sanctions.
The satellite images indicate that the Yarmouk facility includes an oil storage facility, a military depot and an ammunition plant.
The monitoring group said the images indicate that the blast "destroyed two buildings and heavily damaged at least 21 others," adding that there was no indication of fire damage at the fuel depot inside the military complex.
The group said it could not be certain the containers, seen in images taken Oct. 12, were still there when explosion took place. But the effects of the blast suggested a "highly volatile cargo" was at the epicenter of the explosion.
"If the explosions resulted from a rocket or missile attack against material stored in the shipping containers, then it was an effective surgical strike that totally destroyed any container" that was at the location, the project said.
Yarmouk is located in a densely populated residential area of the city approximately 11 kilometers (seven miles) southwest of the Khartoum International Airport.
Wednesday's explosion sent exploding ammunition flying into homes in the neighborhood adjacent to the factory, causing panic among residents. Sudanese officials said some people suffered from smoke inhalation.
A man who lives near the factory said that from inside their house, he and his brother heard a load roar of what they believed was a plane just before the boom of the explosion sounded from the factory.
In the aftermath of Wednesday's explosion, Sudanese officials said the government has the right to respond to what the information minister said was a "flagrant attack" by Israel on Sudan's sovereignty and right to strengthen its military capabilities.
In a Friday speech marking Eid al Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir called Israel "short-sighted," according to comments published by the Egyptian state-owned paper Al Ahram. The president likened the incident to the 1998 bombing by American cruise missiles of a Khartoum pharmaceutical factory suspected of links to al-Qaida.
Some Israeli commentators suggested that if Israel did indeed carry out an airstrike causing Wednesday's blast, it might have been a trial run of sorts for an operation in Iran. Both countries are roughly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away from Israel, and an air operation would require careful planning and in-flight refueling.

Conventional MEMS structures tend to be made out of silicon-based materials familiar to the micro-electronics industry, but this ignores a suite of useful materials such as other semiconductors, ceramics, and metals. By using a variety of materials not commonly associated with MEMS technology, a team from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah has created stronger microstructures that can form precise, tall and narrow 3-D shapes -- characteristics that were never before possible in MEMS.
The researchers will present their latest findings at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 -- Nov. 2, in Tampa, Fla.
To break the MEMS materials barrier, the researchers devised a new production process called carbon nanotube templated microfabrication (CNT-M). It uses patterned, vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays called forests as a 3-D microfabrication scaffold. With this scaffold, the researchers can create precise, tall and fine-featured microstructures. But the forests are extremely fragile. To make them hardier the team replaced the air spaces between the carbon nanotubes with a filler material by atomistic deposition.
The team has used their new CNT-M framework to fabricate metal components from tungsten, molybdenum and nickel. These metals provide desirable properties for MEMS applications and components, including high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperatures, resistance to corrosion, low thermal expansion and hardness.
The BYU team's advances open the door for manipulating matter in novel ways that optimize efficiency, performance and cost across a range of fields, including medicine, imaging, computing, materials synthesis, chemical synthesis, and printing. Most biological and biomedical processes occur at the nanoscale. Developing models and templates at this scale enables scientists to interact with, control and leverage the unusual physical, chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of materials in naturally tiny systems.
Already, the BYU researchers have successfully used their new technique to make chemical detection devices that can validate chemical reactions during pharmaceutical production. Team member Robert C. Davis, PhD , imagines that one day CNT-M might even play a role in devising new longer-lasting batteries.

Gold heads for third straight week of decline
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Gold dropped more than half a percent in volatile trade on Friday, heading for its third week of decline after shares fell in Asia, the U.S. dollar firmed, and fears about the health of the global economy lingered.
Bullion has fallen around 5 percent since hitting an 11-month high above $1,795 an ounce in early October after the excitement ignited by the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest programme of purchasing mortgage-backed debt died down.
Although jewellers are likely to chase gold at around $1,700, the market will be volatile before the U.S. presidential election in early November and massive U.S. government spending cuts and tax hikes due next year.
Gold hit a high at $1,714.65 an ounce before slipping to $1,702.96 by 0618 GMT, down $8.23. It fallen to a 7-week low around $1,698 on Wednesday, when the Fed said it was sticking to its plan to keep stimulating growth until the job market improved.
A stronger dollar dragged down gold prices and selling picked up after bullion failed to break through a key resistance of $1,725 an ounce, said Ronald Leung, director of Lee Cheong Gold Dealers in Hong Kong.
"People are still looking a bit at the downside rather than the upside for the time being, waiting for it to break $1,700. Actually, there are too many longs in the market."
Dealers would keep an eye on the weekly U.S. CFTC commitment of traders figures due at 1930 GMT after last week's data showed hedge funds and other big speculators have cut their bullish bets on U.S. commodities to the lowest levels since the end of August.
U.S. gold for December fell $9.10 an ounce to $1,703.90.
Gold's fall from the peak was also driven by uncertainty related to the so-called "fiscal cliff", automatic spending cuts and tax rises which threaten to send the country back into recession if Congress fails to reach a deficit reduction deal by the end of the year.
Even if a protracted period of negotiations injects a large level of uncertainty into the markets, that could benefit safe-haven assets such as U.S. Treasuries, and therefore the dollar, analysts say.
Investors awaited the release of U.S. third-quarter gross domestic product due later in the day, which could set the tone for the dollar. The annualised rate of growth in the world's largest economy is seen at 1.9 percent, picking up from an anaemic 1.3 percent pace.
"At least we have confirmed the bottom of $1,700. We traded once below that, just briefly, but it looks like after that, there's more buying than selling," said Yuichi Ikemizu, branch manager for Standard Bank in Tokyo.
"I don't think we are going to see some more panic selling," said Ikemizu, adding that gold could trade in a range of $1,700 to $1,740 next week.

After drifting lower for much of this week, the euro looked set to finish in the red, due to uncertainty about when Spain will request a bailout and trigger the European Central Bank's bond-buying programme.
IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde urged world leaders to "do whatever it takes" to rebuild the world's financial system, which is still recovering from the 2007-09 financial crisis and has been further weakened by the euro zone debt crisis.
In other markets, shares and commodities slid on Friday while the yen steadied as investors shunned risk on concerns over corporate earnings, with the region's exporters struggling against shrinking global demand.
PHYSICAL MARKET
The physical market was subdued because of a public holiday in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, but dealers noted purchases from Thailand.
"It's a mixture of buying and selling. There's light buying from Thailand and that's about it. Surprisingly, the demand from India is not there," said a dealer in Singapore, referring to the world's largest consumer.
"In fact, Indian consumers started to sell again when the market was a bit higher. Maybe they will leave it to the last minute before coming back to buy again."
The festival season, traditionally a time to buy gold, is underway in India and will peak with Dhanteras and Diwali next month. Weddings also take place during this period.

TSX halts four-day skid, gold miners soar on results
TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index finished sharply higher on Thursday as strong results from miners Goldcorp Inc
Goldcorp, Canada's second-biggest gold miner, posted a 48 percent rise in quarterly profit, sending its shares surging 6.89 percent to C$43.60. It was the most heavily weighted riser on the index.
Fellow gold producer Agnico Eagle was another top gainer, soaring 8.93 percent to C$55.97 after the company posted record gold production and boosted its output forecast for the year by 5 percent. The results also led some analysts to hike their price target.
"It's been earnings driven to a large extent, especially in the materials sector and the solid earnings from the gold producers," said Elvis Picardo, strategist and vice president of research at Global Securities.
"The earnings and misses and disappointments have been much higher on the U.S. side than they have been so far in Canada. We are beginning to see some appetite once again for the materials stock and so on, so that's lending support to the TSX."
Goldcorp and Agnico Eagle's results helped boost the index's materials group, which rose 2.15 percent. Barrick Gold , Canada's biggest gold miner, was up 2.37 percent at C$39.25.
The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> broke a four-day skid, climbing 105.21 points, or 0.86 percent, to 12,300.23. Eight of the index's 10 main groups were higher.
The energy group was up 0.8 percent, and financials gained 0.35 percent. Together the three sectors make up nearly 75 percent of the index's weight.

CLAYTON, MO (KTVI) ? Carol Morse Perkins, well-known conservationist, humanitarian, author, lecturer and photographer, and the widow of the world famous zoologist Dr. R. Marlin Perkins, died Saturday (Oct. 20, 2012) at her home in Clayton, Mo., after she had been in declining health for several years. She was 95 (born May 25, 1917).?
?It is with great sadness that we witness the loss of Carol, who with her husband was a great voice for conservation and ecology and who carried that message across the airwaves and the globe, working to educate children and adults on the importance of preserving animals now and for future generations,? said Dr. Jeffrey Bonner, Dana Brown president and CEO at the Saint Louis Zoo.

Mrs. Perkins and her husband worked with Washington University in St. Louis to found the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center, now known as the Endangered Wolf Center.? The Center, established in 1971, has been responsible for saving two species of North American wolves from extinction. Today, red wolves and Mexican gray wolves are living free in the wild again thanks to the vision, determination and hard work of Mrs. Perkins and her husband.
In 1974 and again in 1977, Carol Perkins was instrumental in organizing the first two national symposiums on the status of North American endangered species of wildlife.?
In 1962, as director of the Saint Louis Zoo, Marlin Perkins began working on television?s Mutual of Omaha?s Wild Kingdom. The program, which won four Emmys, was on the air for 26 years until his death in 1986. In his autobiography, My Wild Kingdom, Marlin Perkins noted that Mrs. Perkins often accompanied him on trips for the show. ?It was always much more fun when she went along,? he wrote.
With her husband, Mrs. Perkins traveled worldwide to film wildlife for lectures, books and television. She also encouraged Dr. Perkins to hire Charlie Hoessle after hearing him at a community presentation; Hoessle served as director of the Saint Louis Zoo from 1982 to 2002 and worked at the Zoo for 42 years.????
Mrs. Perkins led dozens of safaris in Africa, Australia, India, Nepal and Sikkim. St. Louis newspapers often reported on those, including a story about her expedition to find diamonds by sifting delta sand dug from the bed of a river in Venezuela. Mrs. Perkins founded and served as chairman of the St. Louis Chapter of the Explorers Club, where she was named Chairman Emerita.?
Mrs. Perkins was also a popular lecturer on conservation topics for luncheons and dinners across the nation. She was the conservation commentator for five years on The Eye-Witness News on KSDK (Channel 5) in St. Louis.
Over the years Mrs. Perkins received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Citizen Award by Alpha Gamma Delta sorority for her volunteer work with international wildlife conservation. The Ladies Home Journal nominated her for Woman of the Year for her work in conservation. From 1974 until 1995, she served on the National Board of the American Cancer Society, and received its Volunteer of the Year Award.? Mrs. Perkins received the 1991 Conservation Medal from the Missouri D.A.R., and an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the College of St. Mary?s, Omaha, Neb.
Mrs. Perkins was also the author of numerous books, including I Saw You From Afar, which relates the story of a personal visit to the Bushman of the Kalahari Desert in southwest Africa; The Sound of Boomerangs Returning, which described her observations of the lifestyle of Aborigines; and Little Pierre, which tells the story of the star performer of the famous Saint Louis Zoo chimpanzee show.?
